I was listening to Adam and the Ants Prince Charming album the other day.

Besides the obvious singles i really like this song.

Prince Charming (1981)

Prince Charming was the first album i ever got, i was nine. It was on cassette.

I didn't really buy albums after that, i tended to focus on singles and ended up with a collection of Slade, Wham, Adam and the Ants, The Tweets and Shakin Stevens.

It was only in 1984 (i'd be 13-14) that some new houses were built a couple of minutes away and i was introduced to a lad a year older than me who was into Iron Maiden, Saxon, Venom and Black Sabbath. We hit it off immediately and i was always round his house admiring all the weird and wonderful record covers, even if the music on those records was alien to little old innocent me. Covers like Powerslave and especially Piece of Mind fascinated and horrified me at the same time.

The influence grew and i had Live After Death bought for me on my birthday on cassette.

The rest as they say is history.

Footnote - I did end up borrowing Venom's Warhead 12" from mate. I loved it.

It was pure evil personified on vinyl. I'd never heard anything like it. It's still my favourite Venom song and i still find it rather scary.

At War With Satan (1984)

The third album i got was Black Sabbath's Greatest Hits on vinyl.

That bloody cover. Hieronymous Bosch's The Triumph of Death with all those skeletons slaughtering and dismembering folk. Seriously take a look at the image below. How it must have fascinated and freaked an impressionable kid (In the early 80's things really weren't like they were now being a kid)

I won't even go into Ozzy's performance of NIB. "My name is Lucifer, please take my hand"

To be honest, it's a miracle i didn't need therapy.
