Great review, Nos! |
Yes, very thorough. I didn't know heretofore that Kermode was so down on the film, which may actually be my favourite Fulci (of those I've seen up to now). And yes, a commentary involving Calum Waddell would have been interesting. |

We also had nothing to do with the editing of this so the title blunder pointed out in the above review is not ours! (As an aside, hope people support this release. The BBFC cut is bogus - especially given that you can now tie up a pig and kick it, not animal cruelty at all apparently - and I hope to see more Shameless on HD :) ) |
New York Ripper cuts I'm going to be writing up my own review this week, but wanted to share my thoughts on the edit imposed on the death of Kitty. People might be perplexed that the BBFC targeted this particular scene, considering the explicit carnage already seen up to that point. The thing is, the BBFC are averse to naked women subjected to violence. Naked = sex, which mustn't be in the same scene as the violence lest anyone starts to get the two confused. All well and good, you might think, except that every female character killed in the film has their sexual organs (breasts, vagina) specifically targeted and brutally mutilated. But hey, that's ok because they were fully clothed at the time. So other than that, congratulations Shameless on an exemplary blu ray. I particularly liked your dig at the censors (some prosthetics were damaged during the making of this film) and the trailer for Almost Human looks really good! I'll send a link once our review is up online. |
Just a reminder that this thread is for reviews and links to reviews. :) Obviously feel free to comment on reviews but please remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion. |
I've had a quick look at this one and it looks incredible,I need to watch it soon before the schools finish and the kids are still running about at all hours! |

My Dad watched NYR and he enjoyed it. |
 Definetly not Sarah. Who ever thought this would be released on HD in the UK with one cut eh? I first sought it out on a 400th generation copy from a guy known as 'Lenny' down the Barras. He ran a 'Halloween mask' stall, but was only a front for 'unavailable films'. Before discovering Cult Video mail order in Amsterdam,I was one of his best customers. Film fans these days don't know how good they've got it! Try doing without films like NYR,STRAW DOGS,I SPIT A CLOCKWORK ORANGE,TEXAS CHAIN SAW,THE EXORCIST,CANNIBAL EVERYTHING and having to buy played-out tapes from guys like 'Lenny'-Christ his 12 year old son was his 'runner' as he obviously didn't keep stock on the stall for fear of the boys in blue. Lenny-if you're reading this now, let's hope you've moved with the times and went HD! And that you son has a great career as a barrister or something! |

CALM DOWN! Now that IS scary! Have the 'popular-press' dvd mags put in a review yet? |
Just watch 'NYR' back to back with Lustig's 'Mainiac' and see how you feel afterwards. A real headspin, you realize 'NYR's not too bad (after you have a shower to wash off the sleaze that is:lol:) The odd thing is I think I'm beginning to soften on the old "quacky quacky" film, tho grim there's a lot worse today passing itself off as multi-plex entertainment. Have it on dvd so will be a while before I get the Blu. |
Righty, as this thread was getting very off topic with a very interesting discussion, I have set up a new thread on the gender politics of NYR and moved all the relevant posts there. It was much simpler than having to keep saying :focus: when I was actually very interested in the debate! I'd ideally like this thread to be a resource to find reviews on the new Shameless BD and DVD. Thanks for understanding. :) |
