I love the NYR!...
But I must say, I wasn't a great fan of it either when I first watched it about 10 years or so ago but, every time I re-watch it, it just seems to get better!
I've bought numerous editions of this film now, including the 1st Shameless DVD release - but not the Fan Edition or BD - so can't comment on those, but did pick up the BU BD - which, I thought had stunning picture quality!

Maybe over time its just aged, but I found it quite slow like a bad episode of columbo meets csi. There were a few good gore effects but nothing like his other works. Did anyone else feel let down?
have you seen the uncut version?
well....thats why the videos of TNYR were escorted by security out of the UK!
paranoia and madness from the BBFC and politicians are forever with us unfortunately

"They all float down here, they allll floaaaattt!!!"

Am I right in saying that the BU bd hasn't got the restored scene in the right place as in the AWE dvd?

Not a fan, I sometimes wish Fulci had spent the resources trying to do a American style slasher pic in the Friday the 13th sense instead, as some scenes in The Burning, with their Frizzi-esque synth score, make me think what could had been.

Far from my fave Fulci. It's difficult to get over how totally crap the duck voice is.

I don't like it. I tried. I watched it twice. I can't stand the 'quacking'.

I must say I thought the duck voice was a great idea. It sounds weird and scary. It fits in with the killer and the plot of the movie.

It's Fulci. The flipside of the lunacy of Manhattan Baby for me, a dour delight that does still have a shocking element imo. It depends how much disbelief you can suspend really in my book......

What is ridiculous? A psychopath who has a twisted sense of humor? Hmmm NEVER seen that before........

It's a marmite film. Ask the BBFC who still cut it, even though that sequence is nothing compared to Snuff 102 (ok, bad example....hands up etc). The "imitative" arguement was always the weakest of their weak defence for their scattergun approach to moral guardianship

Ahem.

I'll answer my own question!
No Fangoria, I think made a mistake again, when they said the Blue Underground bd and dvd have the correctly placed scene
must be only AWE......

I've been following this thread with interest, as it's curious seeing the mixed reactions to this grim Giallo from Fulci. Also, let's not rewrite history, this was never officially designated a 'video nasty', it never even came out on pre-cert video over here. Yes, Ferman had it escorted out of the country, I think the reasoning was to get it off mainland Britain before anyone could pirate it and distribute it on the black market. Rejected by the BBFC certainly, but never a 'nasty'.

I personally think it's a great film, very bleak and uncompromising, Fulci at his very best. It presents a dim view on New York City for sure, giving the impression it's full of perverts, murderers and sleazy cops - but I like that about it. It's thoroughly unapologetic and delivers nastiness in spades.

I have to say this is also one of those films where the first time I watched it I didn't really take an interest in, but with more viewings it growed on me! I have the first Shameless release of this and the AWE release.

I guess when I first watched it I was kind of expecting... more. It is a little different from the Fulci films I've seen, but, as I said it grew on me so it's an old favourite.

Perverts, murderers and sleazy cops in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid........

seriously though (but I'm right about the above!) TNYR is an excellent giallo from Fulci and definitely one of his best films

New york Ripper is the only Shameless DVD I own. Very good film, but I got really annoyed at the duck thing.
