I've been following this thread with interest, as it's curious seeing the mixed reactions to this grim Giallo from Fulci. Also, let's not rewrite history, this was never officially designated a 'video nasty', it never even came out on pre-cert video over here. Yes, Ferman had it escorted out of the country, I think the reasoning was to get it off mainland Britain before anyone could pirate it and distribute it on the black market. Rejected by the BBFC certainly, but never a 'nasty'.

I personally think it's a great film, very bleak and uncompromising, Fulci at his very best. It presents a dim view on New York City for sure, giving the impression it's full of perverts, murderers and sleazy cops - but I like that about it. It's thoroughly unapologetic and delivers nastiness in spades.

I have to say this is also one of those films where the first time I watched it I didn't really take an interest in, but with more viewings it growed on me! I have the first Shameless release of this and the AWE release.

I guess when I first watched it I was kind of expecting... more. It is a little different from the Fulci films I've seen, but, as I said it grew on me so it's an old favourite.

Perverts, murderers and sleazy cops in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid........

seriously though (but I'm right about the above!) TNYR is an excellent giallo from Fulci and definitely one of his best films

New york Ripper is the only Shameless DVD I own. Very good film, but I got really annoyed at the duck thing.

I guess that's the idea. You not only want the sucker dead because of his murders, but also because of his stupid duck voice.

Brilliant film, and one of my favourite Fulci. Love it.

Some may think there's too much misogyny in it, others may wish for more... but that's a matter of taste, innit...

Greetings!

I don't get the accusations of misogyny though. Sure, it shows the work and actions of a misogynist, but is the film itself misogynistic? To be truly misogynistic its aim would be to make the viewer a misogynist, to make them hate women. The fact that it doesn't means it's not misogynstic. I mean, did you identify with the duck-voiced killer? Did you find him a laudable character whom you wished to emulate? Of course not, it shows the killer as a lunatic who talks in a funny voice. No-one's going to identify with that. At least...I'd hope not...

Seriously now, I think you're right. I also think the film itself's not misogynistic. That's why I wrote:

I'm not a native speaker, so I don't know exactly whether it comes across the way I intend or not - what I mean is: the murders are not only violent, but also clearly misogynistic, whilst the film itself does not convey a misogynistic message.

Greetings!
