I wouldn't say it's boring, badly paced yes but not boring. It has all the right elements, it's grubby and it's sleazy but does suffer from pacing issues. What makes Toolbox so interesting to British audiences is the fact it was banned, then released cut because of that it has a certain mystique.

In the films defense I've only seen it twice once when I was a kid and about 5 years ago and the picture quality was poor.

I like The Toolbox Murders. It's one of the better nasties in my opinion.

I think it's one of the most dull nasties, but it makes up for it with the bath/nailgun scene.

It's better than the Tobe Hooper 'remake'

It's good to see The Toolbox Murders spoken about again, do a search for it on Google and it appears as though it's been airbrushed out of history, replaced by the Tobe Hooper picture which is inferior to Dennis Donnelly's original. And while it's no Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the second act of the film does a good line in intense sustained terror. Donnelly had previously directed an LA-based cop show for TV and it shows - the film has a real flat 70's ambiance to it that's reflected in the DVD - I wonder what it will look like on Blu-Ray ? Incidentally, I found a copy of the pre-cert Hokushin carton back in the early 90's when I first started collecting and I remember well it wrecking a perfectly a good VCR much to my parent's fury. Video Nasty blues all round...

it looks very good on the BU blu. its the same master as their DVD but with the extra HD clarity. presumably 88 will be using the same materials/transfer. you are right about the TV feel to the photography and set-ups. all self respecting slasher fans need this one in their collection if only for the infamous nail gun scene alone - a jaw dropper even after all these years

Ah, excellent stuff Rob, thanks for letting me know... Didn't Stephen King mention the film in his Dance Macabre book or am I thinking of something else ? I don't have my copy at hand right now to check...

i think Kelly Nicholls might reference that in her interview on the BU. something about him saying it was one of the best death scenes ever. i might be mis-remembering though - getting old ya know
