JUNE ANNOUNCEMENT

'MARTIAL CLUB' (1981)

A gloriously typical entry from Shaw Brothers, Martial Club starring Kara Wei (THE BRAVE ARCHER 2 and MAD MONKEY KUNG FU) and Gordon Liu (THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN) and directed by Lau Kar-Leung (LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA), affords us a fast-paced, cleverly choreographed piece of martial arts fun combining many elements that lovers of this kind of cinema will be more than appreciative of. Rival fight schools, an old master and beautifully designed set pieces tumble together in a colourfully kinaesthetic unceasing parade of flying fists and action set pieces

June announcement

'The Seventh Curse' (1986) - Deluxe Collector's Edition Pre-order available from Zavvi - £29.99

Release date: June 27

"Starring Chow Yun-fat (Hard Bolied, The Killer, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) The Seventh Curse is a curious entry from Golden Harvest, the legendary production company which had previously bought us the stone cold Bruce Lee classics, Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon.

When Dr Yuen (Chin Siu-ho) attempts to rescue a girl about to be sacrificed by the Worm Tribe in the middle of a Thailand jungle, he is damned with seven ‘Blood Curses’. Though he finds a temporary antidote this will only last a year and he must return to the jungle to find a permanent cure.

The Seventh Curse is an adventurous story of lost tribes and deadly magic. Featuring strange locales, evil sorcerers and monsters, this bonkers thrill fest is a rollicking Asian oddity, a must for collectors of exotic Hong Kong cinema."

'ROMPER STOMPER' (1992) - Deluxe Collector's Edition Blu-Ray pre-order availabe from Amazon UK - £34.99

Release date: May 30

"Featuring a young Russell Crowe in a knock out early performance, ROMPER STOMPER is a gritty Australian urban thriller highlighting the danger of scapegoating and racial prejudice. With its skinhead protagonists and violent motif, the movie walks in the shadow of productions such as Alan Clarke’s MADE IN BRITAIN and acted as a precursor to later work like AMERICAN HISTORY X and THIS IS ENGLAND

Hando (Crowe), the psychotic leader of a gang of marauding neo-Nazi teenagers, begins a relationship with the epileptic Gabrielle, but though they at first make a good team the courtship soon turns abusive. Though Gabrielle has designs to take Hando away from his life of crime and destruction, his indoctrination into a racist world viewpoint seems all-consuming

Hard-hitting and at times cruel, this sadistic drama bleeds with unpalatable truths and is difficult to face up to notions of culture, identity and working-class disintegration"

MAY ANNOUNCEMENT

'Human Lanterns' (1982) [aka Human Skin Lanterns] - Uncut Blu-Ray pre-order available from Amazon UK - 24:99

Release date: May 16

"Though featuring the Shaw Brothers custom brand of martial arts mayhem, HUMAN LANTERNS also taps into the early 80s craze for the American slasher film and the earlier Hammer horrors by providing a grisly take on the serial killer feature in an inimitable Hong Kong style

When an unbalanced craftsman decides to get revenge on two Kung Fu masters by creating special lanterns constructed from the human skin of their dead relatives, all hell breaks loose in this gruesome tale of bloody retribution.
Taking its inspiration from movies like Psycho and real cases like Ed Gein, HUMAN LANTERNS is clearly not for the faint-hearted with its over the top gore and sadistic qualities but this slice of darker than dark fantasy still manages to be both wonderfully horrible and impressively entertaining"

Extras:
  • Audio commentary by Kenneth Brorsson and Phil Gillon of the Podcast On Fire Network
  • Interview with Susan Shaw by Fred Ambroisine

I think I may just have died and gone to heaven. This has to be one of the most gloriously insane films ever made. Plus Chow Yun Fat and gorgeous Maggie Cheung.

Both artworks are horrendous.

As for Mardi Gras Massacre. Not impressed with a Zavvi exclusive if indeed that's what it is. Don't like ordering from Zavvi at all. £25 and no details or proper image of what you get whatsoever.
