Callan (the great Edward Woodward) is a professional spy and assassin who works for the dirtiest of all the British security services, and gets all the dirtiest jobs. He is a conflicted character who does not particularly like what he does (in contrast to some other agents such as Meres (the wonderful Anthony Valentine) and Cross (Patrick Mower) but has basically no other skills to fall back on. And besides, you only really leave the service one way.
It's a fantastically dark and gripping show.

Thanks Mr. K.

A nice summary. It sounds like a series i'd enjoy.

Thought Valentine was excellent as Mohn in Colditz.

I watched Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World over the last few days.

Very enjoyable as it collects all the fascinating footage and photographs of things like UFO's, the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot and so forth in one place.

However when it came to Clarke, sat in his Sri Lankan beach house, summing up each episode, it appeared that he didn't believe in any of the myths and phenomena being investigated which sort of made me think 'why bother?'

True but maybe he just fascinated with myths etc.
We don't like or agree with what serial killers do but we still like to read about them .

I've heard of it but know nothing about it. Those two series seem good value at £14 for the pair. Do you think i may like it? I thought Dempsey and Makepiece was superb if that's any help. I have The Sweeney box set but ain't watched it yet, i imagine i'll love it though.

One of the great Thames TV series that was worth watching with superb interplay between the actors. I just loved the character of Hunter played by William Squire in the later series, when Callan headed to color. Those harsh Welsh tones as he orders Callan on his next job. Just don't bother with the 1980 one off TV Movie made by ATV in the early 1980's called Wet Job. It's not the Callan of old. Great series, worth the watch.

Yeah, I didn't think much to Wet Job. It's the old adage that's been proven so true of late - revivals just don't work.
