I've yet to see Retaliation (Amazon shipped it earlier today) but Massacre Gun is truly excellent. If you dig Nikkatsu Noir, classic Yakuza and/or Japanese Pinku cinema then you'll probably enjoy it.

I really hope we see more of this kind of stuff from Arrow in the near future.

Retaliation is my fave. In my humble opinion Massacre Gun isn't truly excellent but it certainly has its truly excellent moments.

My Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll finally arrived today. I'm going to wait until dark and immerse myself in its depravity.

I'm very curious about The Strange case. Is it a horror movie or more of an art house?

Interesting snippet from the Code Red Facebook page regarding Pit Stop.

Quote:
Code Red DVD- arrow got it from Jack Hill and I got from producer Roger Corman. arrow spend money cleaning up Jack Hill print, while mine looks fantastic using Roger Corman's 35mm camera negatives. eiher you pay more money to buy UK one or pay less to get the clean one from the ORIGINAL CAMERA NEGATIVES
He's even selling it via Amazon as a one off in a deal with Kino.... Must be very worried by the Arrow release.

Is it ok to say it has a foot planted in each camp? The horror element is definitely there, with Mr Hyde doing his upmost to rape and/or murder the entire cast.

The movie is simply ravishing to look at and thanks to Arrow's amazing restoration you can savour every immaculately dressed shot. A lot of comparisons between The Strange Case and Vermeer are made (and with good reason), but to my jaded eyes the silhouetted shot of Mr Hyde sitting at the bottom of the stairs could be a lost Sickert, although I have been told on numerous occasions that I need to get glasses.

I haven't delved into the extras, but I did watch an appreciation by Cult Lab's own Mr Michael Brooke. He comes across as agreeable and relaxed, ala Steven Thrower and Kim Newman and I must say that I enjoyed it immensely. He is informative and concise and leaves you wanting to seek out the rest of Borowczyk's work.

Going to be genuinely interested in seeing comparisons. Might even double dip if the quality is improved.
