Arrow releasing a new blu-ray of John Carpenter's The Thing is great news. The current UK version has too much noise reduction and Universal's clumsy auto-clean software actually removed objects from the screen (like snow flakes, helicopter blades, ping-pong balls, etc). The film was crying out for a much better quality UK release.

Wonder if Universal could autoclean Escape from LA and remove some of the clunky CGI?

The Universal release, whilst great for extras, as others have said has always been quite poor, noise reduced and with weird colours. Having seen it on 35mm and then this transfer as a 2k DCP, I thought it was quite poor and wrong, especially when the HD DVD (!!!) did it much better for a very early HD release

Shout is an improvement, but still not perfect. The opportunity is there for Arrow to do this justice, in this day and age we shouldn't have to settle for "decent" with any film in HD

The Scream Factory release of The Thing has 6 3/4 hrs more extras (including the hilarious tv version of the film) on top of the extras on the old disc. I'd assume the Arrow version will be similar, only in a shitty box with cardboard sleeves and a book.

I think the benefit of them releasing the thing now is they can look at previous releases and say 'lets top this'. Scream factory did this with return of the living dead and texas chainsaw 2 so it works both ways. A nice new scan. Archive extraa and some new content and they can wrap it in a bin liner for all I care Certainly Arrow did sterling work with Alfredo Garcia. I'll keep an eye om screams blu as well and double dip if music magpie get it in. Got the SF release of Return of the living dead for £5 that way.

Maybe I need my eyes testing (doubtful) because I can't see bugger all wrong with the UK Blu!
But, if someone on blurage.com says it looks bad then it must be true

A £60 exclusive limited edition version with an LP and jigsaw puzzle only available on its own site so no reward points can be used.

Joking aside, I'm actually looking forward to this release. I didn't pick up the SF version and have the UK Universal BD, which as others have already pointed out could definitely be improved on.

I think Arrow have got a great release in The Thing, but like people say, it will have to be pretty special to top what's already out. Between the 'terror takes shape' docand the russel/carpenter commentary, I don't know if there's much more to say about the movie.
I have found that a lot of the info in the making of documentaries is often repeated in commentaries, as there are only so manystories you can tell about a movie's production.
Including the comic book sequal is a good idea! It was great!
