You mean it isn't crucial to know if the shop is selling supplies for tailors?

It would bother me. I hate it when films have stupid subtitles like 'Insects chirping'

There's a difference between 'English' subtitles and 'English HoH' subtitles, with the latter providing information for those who are hard of hearing and might want a good idea of the atmospherics and context in which events are taking place.

I can understand translating the sign above a shop or a street sign if it is important to the plot, but distracting you with completely unnecessary information is ridiculous.

Shout Factory made a mess of their Bruce Lee releases by having some of the Chinese tracks only available with HOH subtitles, meaning things like "moan" and "grunt" appeared whenever anyone was hit.

With Ronin, there was no need whatsover for that subtitle. It was never on the film before, and no-one even goes in there. They also put one saying Main Post Office over a building that's quite clearly a Post Office, which again, has never been there before. They're distracting and look cheap & nasty, especially as place names have burnt in subs with a particular font.

I don't have those Bruce Lee releases, but subtitles like that are completely unnecessary. The ones that are different and unintentionally amusing are the ones that say things like 'Ominous Music' or 'Funky Jazz'.

I don't have the Ronin BD and am a little dissuaded from buying it now because pointlessly identifying buildings is likely to be, as you say, distracting.

Tbf, it is only twice it does it on Ronin, but it is a little annoying...like companies putting subs over the black bars on 2.35 movies

That Orange is the New Black one made me laugh so much when I first saw it (my flat mate likes to have the subtitles on sometimes).
