Personally i can't listen to anything the man is in. An irritating self opinionated arse. Doubt that's the reason mind.

Are you sure? It might have been the first thing they considered.

I think Mark Kermode is a wonderfully passionate and knowledgeable film writer and journalist. Last year, I went to see him at the Northern Stage talking about music in his life because his book How Does It Feel?: A Life of Musical Misadventures had recently been released and it was a great evening.

Mark Kermode: must confess that I lost respect after he gave Ghostbusters 2016 quite a positive review. And it's rather annoying that any Michael Bay film automatically gets listed as his #1 worst film of the year. Michael Bay films don't have too much appeal for me but it's odd to claim that they're the absolute worst out of so many bad ones.

I want a film critic to tell me what they thought of a film not what i MUST think of it. Thats how it always comes across with Kermode.

In the case of Ghostbusters 2016, it seemed like he got caught up in the whole 'internet misogynist' business and was determined to sing praises just because of that. Considering that he was quite happy to provide damning verdicts on other shitty remakes (such as Nightmare On Elm Street), dare I say that it seemed quite hypocritical. btw I bought Ghostbusters 2016 on blu-ray at full price and sold it to Cex the next day. My wife also thought that it was a really bad film which kinda shows that it's a myth that it was just hated by insecure men.

Kermode? He's alright. He's done some good stuff on The Exorcist and The Devils. Some of his individual reviews are a bit perplexing in their conclusions e.g. Ghostbusters referenced above, and he can be a bit shouty at times. In the end he's a mainstream critic and tends to pander to that audience but I think his occasional in depth dips into cult films are usually worthwhile and insighful.

I think a lot of peoples perceptions of critics are usually down to to two things 1. delivery and 2. how they treat your personal favourites.

There are other reasons. I took a dislike to Barry Norman because he used to say that the most important part of making a film was a good script. No Barry! The most important part of film making is being able to capture an image - that's why its called film making you dunce! See, I still don't like him
