I haven't but it sounds really good. One to pick up methinks.

Yes I have.

It's a (very) late period Noir with a very moody atmosphere and a stand-out performance from Harry Belafonte. Admittedly, it's one I haven't seen in a long while but will definitely be picking it up.

Psychomania

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 11th September 2016 04:22 PM

Ordered mine direct from their store in the hope I'll get it a bit earlier!

Justin101 12th September 2016 06:40 PM

Animation fans should note that the Quay Brothers blu-ray double disc set is an absolute steal at £10.99 on Amazon at the moment.

I'd love if we could some more Jan Svankmajer from BFI in HD :woot:

I had it on pre-order but cancelled it as I'll probably pick it up in HMV instead (where it's also £10.99!)

More Svankmajer would be great... I'd particularly love to pick up Little Otik in HD.

Psychomania is one of those rare releases where i'll be keeping the cover as is without reversing.

Lovely!

Demdike@Cult Labs 17th September 2016 11:00 AM

HMV failed to ship Psychomania.

99.9% of the time they get their new releases out for the Saturday to customers so it's a bit of a let down especially as Culloden arrived early and that was a BFI release as well.

Still never mind, i'll look forward to watching it next Saturday instead. Plenty more to watch. :woot:

BAKA 17th September 2016 12:04 PM

Curiously Amazon have it down for release on the 26th. I switched orders to HMV to save a couple of pound, but Amazon seem to have price matched them now. HMV haven't shipped mine out yet either. I did get Paths Of Glory and Dead End Drive-In from them today though. I don't plan to watch Psychomania until late October anyway, as part of an October Horror marathon, but I'm excited to finally get it, the review from Mondo Digital was stellar.

Release dates seem all over the shop at the minute, Amazon list Satan's Blood for this Monday, HMV for the following Monday.

I'd be tempted to think the release date had changed had others not received their copies already.

Just to confuse things further, Zavvi don't even have it down for release.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 17th September 2016 02:49 PM

Yeah, but buying from BFI direct is like 88 and Eureka (and formerly Arrow).
You get them a couple of weeks earlier.;)

It appears the release date has been put back a week on Amazon....

£4.50 more expensive including postage. I can wait.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 17th September 2016 06:51 PM

Wasn't when I ordered it!
What can you get for £4.50 these days?
Doesn't even buy you a bowl of porridge.......

Justin101 19th September 2016 04:52 PM

My HMV didn't have Psychomania and Amazon is showing next week :(

Has anyone seen it in store?

BFI recommends 50 late-night classics

What to watch at witching hour? These 50 cult recommendations offer flesh, fear, violence and subversion.

For a number of reasons, many films just seem suited to being watched late at night. Whether they are gory horror flicks, cult B-movies, sexually explicit dramas or documentaries with adult themes, there’s no hard and fast rule as to what makes a great late-night movie. It’s a safe bet to assume, though, that naked flesh, graphic violence and coarse language are likely to be on the cards in one form or another. Add to that bold shooting styles, unsettling themes and/or brutally frank depictions of confrontational subjects and you’re all set. Here are 50 to watch when the clock has struck midnight.

  • Antiviral (2012)
  • Bad Timing (1980)
  • Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story) (2015)
  • The Beast (1975)
  • Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
  • The Beyond (1981)
  • The Black Panther (1977)
  • Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971)
  • Blue Collar (1978)
  • The Brood (1979)
  • Chemsex (2015)
  • City of the Living Dead (1980)
  • Dogtooth (2009)
  • Double Indemnity (1944)
  • Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014)
  • Fascination (1979)
  • The Greasy Strangler (2016)
  • Gridlock’d (1997)
  • Herostratus (1967)
  • I Am Divine (2013)
  • Inferno (1980)
  • It Came from Outer Space (1953)
  • Kill List (2011)
  • London in the Raw (1965)
  • M (1931)
  • The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976)
  • Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)
  • The Mask of Satan (1960)
  • More (1969)
  • Nighthawks (1978)
  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  • Peter De Rome: Grandfather of Gay Porn (2014)
  • Scanners (1981)
  • Sebastiane (1976)
  • The Shout (1978)
  • Sid & Nancy (1986)
  • Sightseers (2012)
  • Stray Dog (1949)
  • Suspiria (1977)
  • The 10th Victim (1965)
  • The Thing (1982)
  • Totally F***ed Up (1993)
  • Trans-Europ-Express (1966)
  • Under the Skin (2013)
  • Videodrome (1983)
  • What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
  • Witchfinder General (1968)
  • X the Unknown (1956)
  • Yojimbo (1961)

Won't be long until The Crying Game appears.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 16th February 2017 03:30 PM

May announcements.

Demdike@Cult Labs 16th February 2017 03:45 PM

Not interested in any of those.

This time last year we had the likes of Penda's Fen and Culloden. on the horizon.

Justin101 16th February 2017 03:50 PM

I agree with Dem, BFI isn't very exciting at the moment! Hopefully they're cooking up something good for the summer months. They promised more Flipside! Plus I'm still waiting on the reprint of Privilege to come out, apparently it was 'coming soon'.

I didn't know Privilege was getting a re-release. I nearly ordered that before Christmas, used for £15. Glad i didn't. Hope it ports the same extras.

Scratch that. I meant Permissive.

Never heard of Privilege. Except that it's by Peter Watkins.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 16th February 2017 03:56 PM

Yep, add me as another who's not really feeling very excited by BFI's announcements at the moment.

Hopefully plenty more Flipside will be forthcoming this year.

I've never seen it myself, just seen the trailer and looks great. It's been OOP for a while and someone asked BFI if it was coming out again and they said it would be and have the artwork be in line with the current Flipside releases.

Rob4 16th February 2017 05:51 PM

Hopefully they'll sort out the terribly visible edge enhancement that was on the previous release.

Clarke boxset/The Firm/Penda's Fen as well.

I already have RSABT on Twilight Time.

The Crying Game which is out Monday has been the only interesting release of late.

I bought THE GLASS SHIELD the other week....rather boring I'm afraid....

Not exactly BFI related (although it is posted on BFI's site and contains some films that they themselves have released) but Mark Kermode lists 50 Films Every Film Fan Should Watch.

I think I've seen just over half of them. Overall it's a fairly interesting and eclectic list.

Rik 9th May 2017 07:36 AM

I've seen a pathetic 7 films from that list
