Never going to be the Continental version though, Warren will never sanction such a release.

Vinegar Syndrome are to release volume 2 of their '5 Films 5 Years: Horror and Exploitation' range on March 27th

This is a 2-disc Blu-ray collection of five previously DVD only Horror and Exploitation rarities, limited to 2,500 units:

THE MUTHERS: One man exploitation filmmaking machine Cirio Santiago's high octane and female led action classic, THE MUTHERS, chronicles a dangerous attempt to rescue an inmate from a brutal all-female prison.

FLESH & BULLETS: A confusing film from a confusing filmography, Carlos Tobalina's bizarre 80s updating of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, features the likes of Yvonne DeCarlo and Cesar Romero acting along side Mai Lin!

HANG UP: Unsung auteur, John Hayes' masterpiece of misery follows the sad life of a lonely vice cop who begins an illicit affair with a beautiful prostitute, only to discover that she's underage, sending him into a downward spiral of corruption and violence.

DUNGEON OF HARROW: This Texas made 16mm obscurity directed by comic artist Pat Boyette is a contemporaneous tribute to early 60s gothic horror films, as a shipwrecked sailor finds himself trapped in a castle populated by bloodthirsty nobility.

MURDER ON THE EMERALD SEAS: The directorial debut of Alan Ormsby, this oddball murder murder mystery focuses on a series of mysterious deaths surrounding a beauty patent, promoting the lead detective to go undercover to investigate...in drag!

That's the good thing about Vinegar Syndrome.

I've never heard of 99% of their releases so it's easy not to spend money on them.

Yes, I'm a bit of a sucker for weird curios too.

I read up about Star Time the other day and it sounds fascinating. If Wow list it at about £12-£13 shipped as they have been doing with a fair few VS titles as of late I may take a punt on it.

It also helps that they don't release anything on dvd. :D

Release date March 27th

Before directing the PENITENTIARY trilogy, Jamaa Fanaka helmed these two offbeat genre films, which helped catapult him to recognition as one of the most important black filmmakers working in 70s independent cinema.

In Fanaka’s debut feature, WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES, a young black man is sent to prison, after being brutalized by a corrupt racist cop. Upon release, he takes deadly revenge against the cops, lawyers, and thugs who got him busted, using a most unusual weapon… As much a parody of exploitation films as it is a proud piece of genre cinema, BROTHER CHARLES combines horror and blaxploitation tropes with stirring social subtext resulting in a drive-in movie unlike any other.

Fanaka’s second feature, EMMA MAE, tells the story of a naive young woman who moves from the Deep South to Watts. Initially finding herself at odds with her surroundings, Emma eventually gains acceptance from a local drug addict and dealer. But when he’s arrested and jailed, she plans a daring bank robbery to bail him out… Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals and shot entirely on location in Watts, this uniquely subversive action film is an insider’s view of black, working-class LA neighborhoods.

Vinegar Syndrome brings these two landmark films to Blu-ray, newly restored from their original camera negatives.

Extras include:
• Newly scanned and restored in 2k from 35mm original camera negatives
• “The History of the L.A. Rebellion & Jamaa Fanaka” – an appreciation by Jan-Christopher Horak, Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive
• Post film Q&A with actress Jerri Hayes from a 2017 screening of EMMA MAE at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn, NY
• Trailers, reversible sleeve

Pre-order available from Amazon US - $32.98

I have to admit to not having seen many of them. However, from the ones I have seen Crypt of the Living Dead / House of the Living Dead, Dungeon of Harrow / Death by Invitation, Night of the Strangler, Revenge of the Virgins / Teenage Zombies are probably* worth a look.

*your experiences may vary.

There's plenty of glorious and terrible trash to sift through there though if one was feeling inclined.

Thank you.

I have Dungeon of Harrow and Death By Invitation. Neither is what you would call any good. I did review them both on here last year.

You've sold me on Crypt of the Living Dead / House of the Living Dead. I'll go for that one next month.

Hopefully you enjoy if you do end up buying, and your experience fares better than Dungeon of Harrow / Death by Invitation!

They were okay. Death by Invitation was the better of the two. The prints weren't exactly great either.

VS September releases - never heard of Memories within Miss Aggie? The title sounds like porn but the cover suggests horror. It doesn't seem to be listed on imdb - at least not under this title.

EDIT: scratch that. its a Damiano adult film and is listed on imdb. no idea why the search didn't work on imdb but a google search found it immediately.

VS's Halloween package has some choice titles.

Blood Harvest was rumoured to be part of American Horror Project Vol 2 from Arrow. i guess VS releasing it nixes that idea because AHP were supposed to be UK/US joint releases.

It's all very curious. I wonder if Arrow washed their hands of it. It kicked off on Facebook with Bill Rebane (what is it with people named Bill?), putting out a 'public notice to cease and desist' to which Vinegar Syndrome responded:

Quote:

DON'T PANIC! BLOOD HARVEST is not going anywhere.
Despite the recent spate of bemused nervousness over a post yesterday from the cinematic king of America's dairyland, Bill Rebane, our rights on BLOOD HARVEST are 100% legit. We acquired the title from Films Around the World, the only company to have held any valid claim over it in 25 years. They acquired it through the trustee in the bankruptcy of Shooting Ranch Ltd., the company which produced it. After Shooting Ranch went bankrupt, its IP assets (the film and screenplay copyrights) were sold outright and in perpetuity, with the sales documents recorded by the copyright office.
Although Rebane has, for decades, attempted to claim ownership on the film, going so far as to create a derivative version called 'Nightmare' as well as a more recent (and surprisingly creative) attempt at registering it as though it were a collection of still photographs, none of this undoes the fact that the copyright was legally sold to FATW, rendering any attempts by others to copyright it in any way as irrelevant.

Bottom line, order with confidence.
It's kind of understandable why 88 Films would have licensed from Bill, sure he seems crazy, but his connection with the film is irrefutable and gives an air of legitimacy. I imagine messes like this are very hard to navigate, and untangle, and I feel a little sorry for 88 Films, sitting on a bunch of unsold copies of Blood Harvest, especially as it was a release they actually put some effort into for special features.

I'll still be picking up their October releases though. Especially The Incubus.

I'm extremely excited for their November slate too:

Quote:

As with last year, we‘re going to have two secret surprise Blu-ray titles which won‘t be announced until the early morning of our Black Friday sale, along with three ’regular‘ Blu-ray releases. The headliner, which will be revealed at the end of this month (probably), is an 80s slasher with quite a bit of ’name recognition‘ that, for reasons unknown, has never been out uncut in the states. But we‘ve got that covered…and as for the other two ’secret‘ titles…? Both top shelf early 80s kill-fests, one of which was shot in the summer of 79, but both of which play much more like older films.

I may be mistaken, but I believe 88 licensed it from the same people as Vinegar Syndrome, it just seems that while 88 withdrew it after he screamed legal action, VS have basically told him to **** off.
