Yeah I understand where you're coming from, I can see how the comedy element would be offputting. I can forgive the film that though.

Personally I loved the narration, thought it was a great throwback to the forties and fifties noirs and 'journalistic' style crime films with voiceover throughout. I'm a sucker for those and appreciated that touch in this film.

Haven't seen ZODIAC but its one I've been meaning to check out.

It's by far my favourite Fincher film. The Blu has a load of great special features too . . .

Tell you which one scene is better than this film - the daytime murder in the park in Fincher's Zodiac. I had that scene running through my mind all through TTTDS . . .
You cannot seriously compare Pierce to Fincher. I know what you mean but it's a completely different beast.

I just watched TTTDS wishing all the way through that it was as good as that one scene in the Fincher film. I thought it lacked any sense of suspense, menace, intrigue, or drama. Can't really see why it has a following tbh . . .

Pierce has a unique low budget style and the films scenes proved effective in the day because of the way it was shot. Some of the death scenes when watched in a theater were particularly chilling in the day but I was a much bigger fan of the Evictors back in the day.
Maybe you had to be there but as a drive-in or theater film it was particularly effective. Time and tastes change though. Keep in mind it was a cheaper exploitation horror and not a serious drama ala Fincher. Though Zodiac itself can be a bit on the boring side in my opinion. Can't knock Fincher though unless we are talking about Alien 3...he completely botched that even if he had been able to do his vision.

I frequently underestimate to power of nostalgia! Recently this year for the first time, I also watched Phantasm and Puppet Master, and really didn't like either . . .
