'FEMINA RIDENS' (aka THE LAUGHING WOMAN aka THE FRIGHTENED WOMAN) (1969) - Coming to Blu sometime in 2021 from Mondo Macabro

"One of the best Italian cult movies that hasn't been released a hundred times in the US already, FEMINA RIDENS is a pop-art infused, giallo-adjacent, quasi-feminist psychedelic thriller staring the luminous Dagmar Lassander in the leading role and featuring a stunning soundtrack by the legendary Stelvio Cirpiani.

We're currently hard at work on a new restoration of the film from the original camera negative for a world Blu-ray premiere

More info TBA"

“Yes, FINALLY! We announced this one like two years ago at least. At the time we thought we were a few months away at the most from getting this psychedelic, early 70s Italo/French witchcraft-themed thriller out onto the streets. But alas, that was not to be. Problem after problem beset us with this one. Broken promises, rights disputes, miscommunication, you name it. But we have finally gotten a 2K scan of the film done and it's currently being inspected by our restoration person. So cross your fingers that everything remains copacetic with this film and we can go ahead as planned."

As announced last month we are finally bringing our long awaited release of the Italian psychedelic horror classic QUEENS OF EVIL to BD for our Annual Halloween Sale in October. Here's a few more details on the limited edition -

It will be a two disc set featuring an exclusive bonus DVD with a massive 3 hour+ interview with Italian genre mainstay Ray Lovelock. This career spanning chat won't be available anywhere else, so of course it's a must-buy if you are a fan.

Also, since it's a double disc set we can't release it in our traditional LE red case. So we're giving it a slipcover! See the art attached for the design. The LE will also feature a booklet with a brand new essay on the film by Italian genre cinema guru Roberto Curti. The disc will also feature a brand new audio commentary on the film by film historians Samm Deighan and Kat Ellinger!

This set will be priced at $28 + shipping and will go on sale in late October, along with two more un-announced titles we are also working on right now. Get excited!"
"A couple of things we need to address about our soon-to-be shipped LE Blu of QUEENS OF EVIL -

1) We didn't note it at the time, but because this edition comes with a slipcover, that means that the number on the inner sleeve is covered up. The entire package is shrink-wrapped. Thus, the numbers are not viewable and not sortable. This means that you will receive a random number not a sequential one that approximates when you ordered.

2) Due to internal miscommunication when it was put up for sale, QUEENS was advertised as being "region free". Sadly, this is not the case. It is "region A locked". This was a stipulation of the rights owner, not a decision we made. But we neglected to share this info properly when the pre-orders were launched.

If you purchased this title and this affects your ability to play the disc and you want to cancel your order and get a refund, please contact us at mondomacabrousa@gmail.com with your name and order number. We will take care of the issue for you right away.

This and the other two new LEs will begin to ship in about two days. Thank you for your patience. We'll have news soon about what is next and when they will go up for sale."

***OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT***

'HUNTING GROUND' (aka COTO DE CAZA) (1983)

We hope to be able to ship out the finished product in early to mid April.

"Adele, a female lawyer, played brilliantly by Assumpta Serna, passionately defends criminals, believing that everyone deserves a second chance and that criminality is more often than not bred by deprivation. In the courtroom a pair of local hoods see her in action and decide to follow her. They steal her car, find the keys to her country villa and decide to rob the place. Unfortunately Adele's family turn up at the villa mid-robbery, and her husband is killed. But that is only the beginning of the nightmare …

Directed by Jorge Grau who make the horror classics BLOOD CEREMONY and LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE, HUNTING GROUND is an intense, gripping crime story that takes a savagely realistic look at the social dived between the rich and the poor in the big city. The climax of the film is unrelenting in its depiction of sexual violence and revenge and includes one of the most shocking sequences ever seen in a mainstream film.

Mondo Macabro is proud to present this underseen Eurotrash classic in its first ever English friendly home video release and for the first time ever in HD"

***OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***

'THE HOWL OF THE DEVIL' (1988)

We hope to be able to ship out the finished product in early to mid April.

"Spanish horror star Paul Naschy plays a multitude of roles in a tour-de-force performance in one of his best and most personal films, which he also wrote and directed.

Naschy plays Hector Doriani a stage and screen actor who feel himself living in the shadow of his dead twin brother, Alex Doriani, a famous star of horror movies. Alex’s young son, Adrian, now lives with Hector in an isolated mansion in the countryside. To keep his father's memory alive, the boy imagines himself visited by the spirit of the dead man, incarnated in a series of classic horror character from the past: Mr. Hyde, the Frankenstein Monster, the Phantom of the Opera etc. Also making an appearance in the young child’s fantasies is Waldemar Daninsky, the werewolf character made famous by Naschy himself.

Eric, Alex Doriani’s former butler, now also works for Hector. His main role is to locate and bring to the mansion a series of women who are paid large sums of money by Hector to take part in various sadistic sex games. To complicate matters even further, the games always seem to end with the women getting slaughtered in various gruesome ways by a black gloved, masked killer.

Also on hand is horror diva Caroline Munro, as Hector’s housekeeper and cook, who is being pursued by a local priest with whom she once had a much-regretted affair.

The whole bubbling caldron of mayhem and misbehavior really boils over when Eric the butler mounts a séance to bring back the body of his dead master. But it is not Alex who appears… and all
hell literally breaks loose.

One of the last films to be directed by Paul Naschy, HOW OF THE DEVIL was, for many years, impossible to see in anything like its intended form. This first HD presentation of the film shows it at last in its true glory. One of Naschy’s most savage and most heartfelt films, its reappearance is an event worth celebrating."

DISC FEATURES
  • Region Free world Blu-ray premiere
  • Brand New 4K restoration from film negative
  • Spanish Language with optional English subtitles
  • Brand new audio commentary by Rod Barnett and Troy Guinn of the Naschycast
  • Debut of previously unreleased archival "making of" documentary

LIMITED EDITION FEATURES
  • 1500 numbered copies in the famous red case
  • Reversible sleeve with brand new art by Rick Melton on the A side (censored here but will be uncensored on the product itself) and original poster art by Jano on the B side
  • Full color booklet with brand new writing on the film by Naschy expert Shane M. Dallmann

The first of two we'll be announcing today is the notorious Filipino Exploitation/Arthouse Classick SILIP: DAUGHTERS OF EVE!
In the tradition of Japanese “Pink” cinema comes this shocking, violent and sex-filled movie that caused a sensation when it was screened at the Chicago Film Festival.
The film stars former Miss Philippines, the stunning Maria Isabel Lopez, in her most revealing role ever. It’s an eye-opening example of raw and savage film making from one of its country’s most innovative directors.
Set on the beautiful and remote beaches of Ilocos Norte, the story tells of three women and their struggle to come to terms with their own sexuality against a background of religious repression and male brutality.
The film contains images of sex and violence that may disturb some viewers.

***LIMITED EDITION TITLE REVEAL #2***
Second of today's announcements is this underseen gem in the filmography of the great Jacinto Molina aka Paul Naschy, the grim and gruesome FRENCHMAN'S GARDEN!
“The Frenchman” was what locals called the man who ran the bar and restaurant in the small town of Peñaflor in rural Spain in the early part of the 20th century. But Juan Andrés Aldije Monmejá was not your usual jolly inn keeper. He ran an illegal gambling den and pimped out the waitresses who worked for him, arranging abortions for them when the inevitable happened. Even though he was married to one of the richest women in town, Juan Andrés was not averse to visiting his own bordello for late night entertainment.
Deciding that there were easier and quicker ways to exploit his customers, The Frenchman started slaughtering them, stealing their money and burying their corpses in the garden at the back of his inn. As his greed increased, so did the savagery of his murderous acts. It was not long before people started asking questions.
This gruesome story of one of Spain’s most notorious serial killers was a very personal project for Paul Naschy, who wrote, directed and acts in the film alongside two of the hottest female stars of the time. This macabre tale of a “black legend” from Spain’s rural past was impossible to see for many years but is now available, fully uncut and restored, for the first time on US home video.

'DR. CALIGARI' (1989) - Coming next year from Mondo Macabro in a new 4K restoration

"In 1989, Stephen Sayadian, aka Rinse Dream, released one of the most iconic and fantastical works in American exploitation cinema. For the first time since its release, thanks to a new restoration, it will finally find its audience, and retroactively be appreciated as the underground masterpiece that it is. Bizarre, stunning, goofy and unsettling, DR. CALIGARI embraces the avant-garde in its exquisite and hilarious exploitation of America’s repressed libido. As the film’s title might suggest, the film is a loose remake of the German Expressionist classic, following Mrs. Van Houten, a woman who seems to be losing touch with reality, and her treatment under Dr. Caligari, who diagnoses her with a “disease of the libido”. Far more than just narratively similar, Sayadian's background in set design and art keeps with the silent classic's highly stylized design, updated with the bright, disorienting commercialism of 1980s Americana. DR. CALIGARI might be one of the American cinema's most incisive and unique portraits of national excess ever to grace the screen.

Above all else, though, the film has a biting and over-the-top sense of humour. The dialogue is ripe with delicious one-liners (“My feelings are like filthy prayers I want to scream into your face”) and incredible visual gags. In just the first few minutes of the film, we get the first visual joke as SMPTE colour bars slowly peel away to reveal a naked woman lounging on a couch. Aware that some omniscient force is exposing her nudism, she tries to hide behind the disappearing bars. In rare exploitation form, DR. CALIGARI maintains its wild and intoxicating energy throughout, pulling the audience deep into its erotic nightmare world, in an experience not soon to be forgotten"
