Question Disaster Movies: We're All Going To Die!

Hi Cult Labbers,

Today sees the release of the newest disaster movie, San Andreas hitting UK cinemas, so today's featured thread is dedicated to the very best (and worst!) disaster movies.

It's a bit of a vague term, 'disaster movie' but for me films like Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, Towering Inferno and so on are the type of films.

What's the best and the worst disaster flicks you've seen?

I'm tempted to go for Dante's Peak myself. Such a great film - I remember watching the part with the old woman getting her legs burned off as a kid and it stuck with me.

So what's your thoughts? Are you even a fan of disaster movies?

I got a two for one voucher in the post as a promotion from the local cinema so I'm going to go see San Andreas Sunday if it's rubbish no big loss.

I'm sure it'll be fun, even if the film is a bit pants Nordic. Mass destruction on a big screen sounds like fun to me

What would your top 5 disaster movies be?

When I was working at a cinema, we were not permitted to describe these kind of films as 'disaster movies' in case some customers took us literally, and thought the film was a total disaster!

Oh that's interesting! Did you have any other rules like that, Susan?

That terrible 'film', Disaster Movie from a few years back certainly lives up to it's name!

I love my disaster movies.

Anything from Dante's Peak to The Day After Tomorrow, from Juggernaut to Earthquake, Twister to The Towering Inferno with a bit of Airport 1975 thrown in for good measure.

San Andreas will be a must buy.

The only one i really didn't get along with that i can recall was Deep Impact.

Nothing springs to mind, but I would imagine we couldn't describe a horror film as such for the same reason

Sadly, it was a 'family' cinema, and during my time there, we didn't show any scary films

Can't really say I've watched many disaster movies, but back in the day going to see Independence Day in the cinema was quite epic! and later on VHS.

Haven't seen it since the 90's I think, but I imagine only good thing about it now would be Jeff Goldblum!

Remember seeing Dante's Peak too on TV a long time ago, but don't remember much of it.

Quite surprising really to realize I don't remember seeing more. Seen clips of The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, but I've been avoiding to see the full movies. They seem terrible.

Do Godzilla movies count?

2012. The world turns to shit, but a white family are reunited so that's ok.

I felt the same about World War Zed btw.....

Of course Godzilla counts!!! Wouldn't a biiig lizard tearing up your home town be counted as a disaster???

Except Emmerichs shitty movie of course, a disaster of a whole different kind...
