Two words sum this set up: Jock Stewart. Every scene the guy appears in is a gem - Tommy Dysart makes this evil bastard genuinely creepy, even when he's not doing much. Episode 116 is packed full of incident, and ends on a classic cliffhanger; Jock's long farewell speech to Jude in 119 is superbly written and acted; Leanne's tragic fall at the end of 121 is brutal and shocking... ...the Jock Stewart storyline was too short - these half dozen episodes were many, many orders of magnitude more thrilling than anything else that happened in the show until Sandy Edwards came along over a hundred episodes later. Elsewhere, you've got Judy and Sharon's love/hate relationship spicing up the show's dynamic very nicely; you've got the tragic death of Leila and the kids; Geoff Butler finally gets his comeuppance... a lot of good stuff builds up to Jock's brief stint. Downers? Kerry's not so bad, but all the other characters in her storyline (bar Helen Smart, of course) are woeful. She lingers on a bit too long, really. Caroline and Vivienne are far worse offenders on that score, though - not exactly firm favourites, those two. Still, these are only transient guest stars - for as long as Lizzie Birdsworth is around to steal the show, these DVDs are well worth the RRP! Love her trial in 105!!! |
