Default Cyberpunk Cinema

Hi everyone,

I'm surprised we don't already have a thread on Cyberpunk! Anywho, here we go!

Cyberpunk is, basically, a stylish post-modern take on the sci-fi genre that merges high, futuristic technology with low life struggles!

So, think Matrix, The Terminator, Ghost In The Shell and of course Akira (click here to see it on the big screen for it's 25th anniversary!)

What are some of the greatest cyberpunk movies? Are you a big cyberpunk fan?

Japanese Cyberpunk such as the Tetsuo films, Pinocchio 964 and Rubber's Lover immediately spring to mind, for me.

There is something glorious to behold in all that Japanese madness and beautiful cinematography...

Tetsuo:

Pinocchio 964:

Tetsuo is a superb movie, BE! I can't say I've seen Pinocchio 964 but from that image it looks pretty crazy...

'Strange' would be the best word to describe it

It's a Japanese art film, so that in itself should warn off anyone looking for a cognitive narrative. From the same director as Pinnochio 964, it's less fractured than the aforementioned film, but consists of an array of graphically violent and sometimes psychedelic visuals all in glorious black and white, as we follow a group of scientists who are conducting experiments on human guinea-pigs, which include sensory deprivation and mind altering drugs.

Would Blade Runner count as Cyberpunk?

I found Perfect Creature to be quite enjoyable.

No problem. It's definitely an 'acquired taste'.

The only current release of it I know of, is the US Unearthed DVD.

It can be picked up on Amazon marketplace used & new from £6.85.

I'd be interested in reading your thoughts on it, no matter how brief
