Its worth watching for that middle. But in my opinion Stanley kubrick should have cut everything else out and just had the film be about HAL going crazy.

I only saw it recently and thought it was amazing stuff...monkeys, weirdness and Rupert Rigsby as a Russian. It doesn't come much better than that.

Visually its probably one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Looking at Kubrick's other work I much prefer A Clockwork Orange and The Shining however I still like this one very much!

Agreed. Sadly, the film itself is very boring!

Anyway...there is a 'mash-up', featuring the "star gate" sequence, set to the song 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd

About the only thing I enjoyed was the music and visual's to 2001. But a few years ago, a friend of mine, who is also a freemason, said to me, "have you seen 2001"?, I said yes, quite a few times in the past. He said to me that 2001 is full of symbology that Kubrick added into the movie that had esoteric meaning, and that it wasn't coincidental either. Since I was told about this, I haven't looked at 2001: A Space Odyssey in the same way again.

And I'm not a conspiracy therorist either. A true story, and a word without a lie.

John Landis is a fan of the film I'm guessing - a stray line of dialogue from 2001 where someone says "See You next Wednesday" pops up in many Landis films - I could be wrong but it's the name of the blue movie in American Werewolf in London. A very cool little homage I think...

I read somewhere than the line "see you next Wednesday" is a play on "see you next Thursday" ahem... and it was put into a film or story as a way of expressing anger at someone without them realizing it or causing censorship problems, kinda like verbal graffiti. Only the film maker knows who it refers to. Might be pure hokum.

Second only to Eyes Wide Shut as my favourite Kubrick movie. Lots of theories surround the film but at the moment I think the film is the monolith and the message is both terrifying and strangely uplifting.

I love 2001, it's one of my favourites that I re-watch regularly. That said, I find it very difficult to articulate a meaning behind the film. Its a beautiful work of art and I love it!
