Phantoms (1998) Phantoms (1998) Based on a Dean Koontz novel and screenplay,a bunch of good looking actors with great teeth find that a town called Snowfield, in Colorado has all been pretty much wiped out by something or just some things mysterious.,Sisters Rose McGowan as Lisa Pailey and Joanna Going as Jennifer Pailey, are the first to stumble upon an assortment of dead bodies and severed body parts, its not long before they bump into clean cut Ben Affleck as Sheriff Bryce Hammond and his dopey side kicks Liev Schreiber and Nicky Katt . Although pretty derivative of so many other films from Omega Man to The Thing,Phantoms starts of fairly well building some nice tension and an air of mystery as to what actually happened to the towns folk.Of course seeing as this is the nineties we are subjected to an awful lot of shining torches in the dark and the firing of guns at anything that moves in the darkness. But have no fear as Peter O'Toole as Dr. Timothy Flyte an expert on all things strange and bizarre is brought in to help solve the mysterious occurrences. While all slickly well made and has a fair amount of grisly body parts on show, you do get that aching feeling at the back of your neck ,that we have all seen this before in one form or another, especially when the Army turns up in there chemical warfare garb, mind you my sense of deja vu was rightly triggered as I had recently re-watched The Blob remake which it resembles a lot in some scenes and also in atmosphere and style. In fact in one scene involving a dog,the film-makers manage to cram in everything from Carpenters Thing to Ridley Scotts Alien to Event Horizon and back again to John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. But that said I love all those films so Phnatoms is a very enjoyable science fiction romp, just as long as your not expecting anything to original or for it to make much sense.

No pics of McGann so it's not the directors cut version. |

Event Horizon (1997, PWS Anderson) (So basically what I surmise from the comm is that they showed the film to test audiences too early on in post production. Because this is what he says . So ... due to some clods it seems ... the film was stripped of its more extreme elements. Tsk! Since it is from 2004 ... there is no mention of reassemblage. Am looking forward to the '6 part' making of ... ) Sam Neill can really go for it can't he? . Spaceship goes missing. Imagine the insurance claim . I do love this film. For all that it's flawed .... and boy is it flawed. But the imagery . So a BD will be mine in time. Does it make a great double bill with In The Mouth Of Madness ... ? I think I'm about to find out
