From that description, it sounds a bit like Under the Skin! It's a shame it's not available to rent from Lovefilm though.

I had to import the region A blu-ray. It's not going to be everyone's taste, its very ambient with a wonderful electronic score, very 80's almost entirely style over substance with some astonishing visuals. I liked it, some might not.

Yes, it's a very 'Marmite' film due to its style and the overall aesthetics. I'm very much in the 'love it' camp though and it is actually among my favourite films of the decade (so far).
