How long are we making the lists? It needs standardising.

Maximum of 100 again? I can then use the same scoring system - assuming you want me to compile the list again of course! :mummy:

That would be fantastic.

Thanks for the offer b_e.

Nordicdusk 29th October 2014 04:40 PM

Yeah 100 sounds good to me. Hope no one minds that I took it upon myself to start the thread. I was the one that took the other thread off topic.

I did suggest someone start a thread to stop sci-fi chat on the other thread.

You must not have noticed.

............................................

I think we need some sort of criteria here otherwise the poll could be full of Frankenstein's and The Thing type films.

Not at all - this having its own thread would be a good way to gauge interest.

Plus, people are free to make all the threads they like... within reason of course :tongue1:

How about if IMDb lists the film as having sci-fi as a genre then the film is fair game?

I will be able to do 100 Sci fi films. :)

Demdike@Cult Labs 29th October 2014 04:54 PM

I've just listed my top 50 already, not in order i might add.

It might be a struggle to do a top 100.

I might end up adding things to make up numbers.

Wow - that was quick!

I have a feeling I may struggle to get a Top 100 I'm happy with... after all, it took me three years to complete my Top 666 horror film list.

I can see all my sci-fi movies from where i sit at my PC. ;)

Where do things like Harry Potter, Krull and LOTR fit in?

Are they sci-fi? Is fantasy like that allowed?

Potter. LOTR is not classed as sci-fi. Krull however is. :)

I think we may have to take the approach as we did in the horror list and leave it to the individual to decide. If you think a film is borderline then it's up to you whether you want to include it, but if no-one else sees it as 'Sci-Fi' then it might not make the overall list.

I don't really want to dictate to people what they can/can't include, as genre is open to interpretation to an extent, which we've already seen in the horror list with the likes of Silence of the Lambs, Seven, King Kong etc.

Nordicdusk 29th October 2014 05:31 PM

Just checking IMDb to see what qualifies there are so many films I would never regard as Sci-Fi this may be harder than I taught.

Oh no I didn't mean anything by It I just never realised how much ground was covered by the term Sci-Fi I'm still a novice of horror let alone other genres :skull:

sjconstable 29th October 2014 06:43 PM

I think we should make it top 50.

Buboven 29th October 2014 07:29 PM

Would Day of the Dead (1985) or Frankenstein films (Universal and Hammer) be science-fiction. I think they could be classified as such as they deal with science after all.

I think we should play it by ear and see how many people submit lists and then take it from there.

Completely your choice, Bub. If you consider a film Sci-Fi, by all means list it! :frank:

Buboven 29th October 2014 08:39 PM

In fact u could say that all Romero's zombie films are science-fiction or the return of the living dead series - created by military science.

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 08:52 PM

true wasn't night of the living dead hinting that it was a space probe that brought back the virus.

I wouldn't class any of these as sci-fi. Technically yes, but in the interests of the list they would be in the horror countdown. Otherwise it's just going to be the same films in each list which is pointless.

Vipp 29th October 2014 09:53 PM

For any film to make the list it has to have at least 2 votes right? unless Biz doesn't get a lot of input? I love horror films but this list is getting me more excited than the horror list did. I love Sci-Fi movies.

Shivers, for example, Parasites, isnt that science fiction

As b_e says it's each to their own. :)

Personally anything i would put in the horror list won't be on the sci-fi list.

Star Wars, Star Trek's, Matrix's, Star Crash's etc - I don't need to put Frankenstein movies in there.

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 10:47 PM

But isn't Shivers basically to do with an experiment about replacing an organ with a parasite, that's pretty sci-fi inmo.
But i get what you mean.;)
Although shouldn't that mean we should take Alien out the horror list?;)

Vipp 29th October 2014 10:56 PM

Well i got a top 50 as simple as anything but if i type another 50 out i will be listing low budget stuff i love because im weird so i will do a top 50 again.

Alien is a classic hidden threat horror film that's set on a space ship rather than a house. The other films in the series are purely sci-fi.

Sorry, i don't want this to go round in circles, as i said it's purely each to their own.

I just feel if everyone is going to vote for films they put in the horror poll it's a waste of time. Especially as there's so much other sci-fi out there.

:)

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 11:07 PM

I'd still say Alien's more sci-fi than horror.;)
Dem goes off to get his shotgun.:tongue1:
I'll keep one eye open tonight.:)

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 11:10 PM

I'd also class Jaws as a freak of nature rather than horror.:tongue1:

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 11:14 PM

You do know i'm deliberately winding you up now Dem.;)

In all honesty great work with the poll, i'll try to get my sci-fi list sorted soon.
i will probably lean towards the 50's stuff myself. Does 1984 count as it's not specifically scientific?

Get lost!! :p

As the classic dystopian view of the future i think it may count.

I've never seen it. :peep:

Nordicdusk 29th October 2014 11:21 PM

I have listed 70 so far it may take me a bit longer to get it to 50 and then put them in order. Hope to have it finished tomorrow afternoon.

nosferatu42 29th October 2014 11:22 PM

It's pretty downbeat, but in my mind is classic sci-fi.:)
Never seen the bbc version tho, its either Cushing or Pleasance keep meaning to check it out.
Still the film with John Hurt is pretty good i think.
