I love that spat. In fact i love Army of Ghosts / Doomsday completely. It's let down a bit by a hurried and lovey dovey finale but on the whole it's brilliant. Moffat never bettered it and Chibnall will have his work cut out to come even close.

Part 3 (I think) of my McCoyathon....

Season 25, it's a marked improvement in all areas with a fantastic core cast of Sylvester and Sophie, the guest cast are more appropriate, the stories are much more interesting and adult in their nature. We also have the first inklings of a more darker, mysterious Doctor with questions raised about who or what the Doctor was up to on Galifrey before he escaped. It's also mentioned numerous times that the Doctor was involved with some of the very Timelord events, so just how old is he, or is he the reincarnation of some ancient Rasilon type Timelord?

Anyway... Here's my thoughts on Remembrance, Happiness and Nemesis..

Remembrance of the Daleks
What else can anyone say about this late era classic? It's got Daleks blowing the shit out of each other, the Special Weapons Dalek, a sub plot about a disillusioned Nazi sympathiser, Davros, some ancient Timelord tech in the form of The Hand of Omega and lots more. The only thing that dates Remembrance are the special effects, not the explotions but the paintbox effects and such.

Happiness Patrol
I know a lot of people don't like this particular story but even on broadcast I was intrigued by it's social commentary on both politics and mental health. As a melancholy child I would probably have been a Kill Joy! One thing I've never quite understood is why people think Happiness is a 'gay' story, pink is not exclusively a gay colour these days it's more a representation of the current Barbie generation. However pink is used in the story as a metaphor for happiness and anything that is drab should be brightly coloured. The Marmite character here has always been The Candyman, personally I love the design and the whole character. A comedic, twisted, bitching, psychopath dressed as Bertie Basset. What isn't there to love?

Silver Nemesis
The plot is virtually Remembrance but instead of Daleks we have Cybermen, very shiny looking Cybermen which is very pleasing on the eye. The main thing that work in the stories favour is the Nemesis statue itself, it's very spooky looking and that voice. The Cybermen die far, far to easily for my liking though.

I've never had a problem with any of the FX work on Remembrance.

The Happiness Patrol is stunning. Everything about it works for me. I can't recall it ever being a 'gay' story. A political satire, certainly, but never 'gay'.

Good work by the way, Jamiouse.

The FX work on Remembrance is still very good for time, if they could have a full on Special Edition and CGI some of the effects it would look better. The updated effects they did for a lot of DVD releases were visual improvements. It's been mentioned in various publications and other places that Happiness Patrol has 'gay' connotations, it has been pointed out Helen A's partner elopes with another man (shock horror) which I've never considered as been eloping, their just friends whom want to escape Terra Alpha. So they do, whether either of them is gay, bi or straight their friends who are fed up of the situation and take opportunity to leave. I forgot to mention the Pipe People earlier, they are wonderful creations that because of their demeanour illicit a lot of sympathy. It's just a shame the whole thing was shot on videotape and not film, it would look amazing in HD.

There are a lot more gay references or situations in the current series than there ever were in the classic series. This despite John Nathan Turner and production manager Gary Downie being partners. According to Sylvester McCoy in the latest magazine. In the years since it ended commentators decided Ace was gay but that was never the idea at the time. References to sexuality were not part of the show.

Personally i think people are desperate to find certain agendas in things from the past whether it was meant or not. Take the Gerry Anderson series UFO. It's a fetish costume delight but back then it was just seen as sci-fi.

Ace could never be gay, she got all hot and bothered seducing that solider in Fenric! I find it rather sad that people decide to pull characters or scenes apart well after the fact, I'm sure at the time the writers had their ideas as did the directors and the actors. I can't wait for the day when The Moomins is considered incestuous, maudlin, Scandinavian porn!

The current series has had lots of gay and lesbian characters which is good but also sometimes seems a little desperate to be oh so inclusive. Characters like people in real life are not defined by their sexual preference. There's no getting away from one of Moffats best lines though 'I am a lizard women from the dawn of time and this is my wife Jenny'.

Sex references are cringe worthy nowadays.

Who could forget Vastra a female Silurian, when she looks at Jenny, says 'we're married you know', then flicks out a reptilian tongue into Jenny's crotch as Jenny giggles.

Okay it may not have actually played out quite like that but it was laid on so thick you couldn't miss it.

Then there was Amy and the Doctor at the end of Flesh and Stone. That was just so wrong.

No sex in Doctor Who. It just isn't necessary.
