The issue is that Nu-Who is predominantly aimed at children, so they inevitably will go to increasing lengths to be 'down with da kidz'.

The awful RnB will hypnotise them all into watching it. If that doesn't work then the endless slew of toys and merch will.

Sadly it's hidden behind a paywall/subscription thing, but during an interview in The Times, Chris Chibnall confirmed that River Song, Missy, The Paternoster Gang and The Weeping Angels will not be returning. He also said that it will be some time before both the Daleks and Cyberman are featured in the show again
