Popular music in 'Doctor Who' #48

Episode: 'Daleks In Manhattan' (ii)
Artist: Irving Berlin
Title: Puttin' On The Ritz
Notes:
* heard in the background when The Doctor explains the concept of a 'Hooverville' to Martha. It is stated that a Hooverville is "a place for anyone who has nowhere else to go."
* The song was originally published by Irving Berlin in 1929. 'Daleks In Manhattan' is set in 1930
* Although it was used as the theme to the 1930 film 'Puttin' On The Ritz', it is possibly best known for it's appearance in the Mel Brooks movie 'Young Frankenstein'

But put things into perspective:

* 19.7% of the total viewing audience
* The 7th most popular programme on British television
* 'Dancing On Ice', which was scheduled opposite and used to top the ratings polls, got 4.63 million viewers
* The top rated programme, 'Call The Midwife', only had 6.25 million viewers

The days when the show would regularly get over 10 million viewers are long gone

So more than half a million people tuned out when it came on, and two million more came back for the next show!

That doesn't read well in any language.

It seems the BBC are seriously losing ground on Parody Who. Do you remember when Dr Who was the toast of America. David Tennant and Matt Smith drew in impressive audience figures for BBC America. Now Dr Who no longer has that buzz about it. Nobody even bothers with the show, and it's pretty evident. Even merchandise sales have slumped dramatically. Just like Star Wars in the U.S. It seems the BBC can no longer rely on Dr Who, cos they've killed the show off themselves. The BBC are committed to one last season, I just hope this absolute embarassment is finally laid to rest. It's not done the legacy of Who any good.

The show needs an exceptionally long break. Seeing that the BBC "might" be broken up and downsized as a corporation, then maybe the show might comback in a new form. Whatever that new form will be. The BBC's days of great TV seem to be over.

Some of that decline started creeping in with the Capaldi era. Once all this Diversity and Inclusion came into the mix with the BBC, during series 10, the show was already beginning to take a gradual dive. Now the American market has totally collapsed. I think the only people watching Parody Who now are those that like being preached too, and those who are in a state of denial. Wanting Parody Who to be like Dr Who of old. Not even the Daleks or Cybermen can save it from being excruciating to watch.

I don't. I stopped watching midway through Capaldi's last series. But I do keep an eye on Parody Who with some rather great reviews on YT.

I didn't even watch Capaldi's last entry,
Twice Upon a Time.
