Well Dem,

you can always put that Blu-Ray disc to good use.

Use it as a frisbee for your dog. At least The Last Jedi will have some positive benefit in the short term.

Me and my kids enjoyed The Last Jedi, but I can’t stick up for that ridiculous Leia scene, easily the worst scene in the entire Star Wars saga, and that includes anything featuring ****ing Jar Jar Binks!

I think if anything I've come to the realisation in the last few years....

Star wars is actually pretty shit.

Don't get me wrong, I find it entertaining. But then I've just been to see rampage. That was complete shit bit I found it very entertaining.

More that with age (I'm now 38) I've somewhat outgrown the franchise a little and I'm left with the afterglow of nostalgia. I'm minded to think about goonies as well. I loved that growing up but looking back on it now I realise it was never great cinema. If anything I find myself siding more with Alec Guiness who pretty much saw the paychecks from the series as a great way to finance his theatrical ambitions. I've been a bit of an argumentative prick on this thread. Frankly reading back over it I feel a bit ridiculous. A kids sci-fi / fantasy franchise designed to sell toys, something I'm beginning to realise I probably outgrew. Hell I don't even get to wallow in nostalgia from it anymore seeing as the films I grew up with barely exist. At least with goonies the film on the blu-ray is the film I first saw.

The truth is it's impossible to ruin star wars. It always was. All that matters is if people had a good time or not. In that respect if No one going to see last Jedi had a good time then the film was a failure. If they did it was a success. Beyond that it's all just silly. So for now I'm just going to see the films as they come out. I'm going to say if I liked them or not. I'm not going to lie and say I hated last Jedi because I didn't. I may think otherwise if I check it out on Netflix as the small screen can change my opinion on a lot of films.

Totally agree. If I look at the films without the nostalgia goggles they aren't masterpieces of cinema dont get me wrong i enjoy most of them but as said they are kids films and most aren't that well made, will see the new films but will try to be less nostalgic , think I'm going to rewatch the fims but this time with the goggles off and think that scores will be different.

When you say they aren't well made what do you mean?

For all the faults there's nothing wrong with the way the films are made. Sure the dialogue at times can be a bit clunky but i don't see a problem with anything else. Even The Last Jedi which i called derivative is still a very well made film.

If it's the effects you mean well i still disagree as i think the opening shot of Star Wars (The Imperial Cruiser coming into view) is one of the most iconic scenes in cinema and is a superb bit of model work.

Its mainly the dialogue but also the direction of the early films and the prequels I found badly paced something I can say about last jedi and after watching it again today I can say my score has dropped to 5/10. I think all the arguments about how bad etc it is made me rate it higher than in really should of, yep the whole casino plot is dreadful and I'm sticking to that now. It had some beautiful shots but was all pretty shallow and generic. I struggled too finish.

Well aside from the first film being rescued in editing (and ultimately cementing George Lucas decision to walk away from cinema) I was thinking more the weak narrative arcs, underwritten characters and plot contrivances that hold the films together like superglue. It's a shame when you think how a lot of 70s Hollywood cinema strove for the sort of intelligence and artistry found in European cinema and with a stroke Lucas and Spielberg went and pinched a lot of Roger Cormans showmanship and invented the summer blockbuster.

Fair enough.

Opinions differ of course. I've not thought the pacing let any of the films down up until The Last Jedi which we both thought dragged in the middle.

Agree again. Explained the problems better than me. I rewatched jaws today as well and that is still as brilliant as ever and deserves its places in cinema history a masterpiece of direction etc, something i know I will not feel rewatched the star wars films. I think the highest rated when I rewatch will be empire but I highly doubt it will rate any higher than a 8.
