Much as I loved his 2009 Star Trek film , I felt that Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Wars Force Awakens were just painfully average films. Still, I'm sure that Disney and Kathleen Kennedy feel that they've made a safe choice.

Lets just hope it doesn't translate into average fan fiction

I'd feel happier if he was just directing and not also co-writing...

The issue with The Force Awakens was a weak script imo. It had too much reliance on far too familiar Star Wars territory and many people described it as a loose remake of A New Hope. It certainly didn't feel as brave as Rogue One. The most interesting moment was the death of Han Solo and that was just at the insistence of Harrison Ford. btw Even that seems quite unoriginal as the 1977 film had Obi-Wan killed by Vader.

Let's hope that Episode 9 turns out much better than JJ Abrams' last effort...

That's exactly it, even the moment where they all react to hans death was rather similar in many ways.

Shameful waste of Max von Sydow too. The whole film was just shockingly shit! Will The Last Jedi just be a pale, semi-remake of The Empire Strikes Back with little bits added on to make the film look slightly different from a "true classic" like Empire??? I'd say place your bets now.

I'm thinking the same, watched force awakens not long ago and really didn't enjoy it as much as the first two times, think it will get worse with each viewing.

Going into the last jedi with low expectations.

As an actor, you can't go wrong with old Sydow. Working with Ingmar Bergman, Flash Gordon as Ming and (cough), that cheesy film that I love so much with von Sydow as Brewmeister Smith, Strange Brew. What a film.

A movie with more out of this world comedic fun than what J.J. Ab's delivered in The Farce Awakens. Time to grab a beer and watch Strange Brew again. Classic.
