In the prequels. Or in the 'expanded universe'.

Your making the classic star wars fan mistake. Your not viewing the films as standalone projects.

There was NO backstory to the Emperor, up to an including the point Vader chucked him off that ledge.

Then about 2 decades later we get the prequels with some jumbled mess of a plot where he's a politician making shady behind the scenes deals.

I'm sure someone probably wrote a book or something expanding it but Palpatine has barely more background than snoke

Professional film criticism wisely disregards if some plot detail was explained in a spin off book or comic. Its about whats in the film. The whole purpose of Snoke was to be the generic evil lord so he could be a sacrifice to show the characters are not being bound by that in this series of films,

thanks explained it better than i did, you can't complain about Snoke when the emperor had no back story as well

But plenty of people like last Jedi. It's a well constructed and reasonably thoughtful and progressive entry in the franchise. It's made by a director who is well regarded in the industry.

If Disney scraps star wars. Pretends it never happened. Closes down the theme parks and hands the series back to Lucas I'd bet cash money we'd be here having the same discussions once Lucas had turned out three more of his 'vision

The people complaining will never get the star wars they want. It's not possible to make that film.

All the critics did was give an opinion on the film itself as a standalone product. It's pretty hard to factor in the impact of 40 years of fandom with tie ins, cartoons, the Christmas special (yes no one's forgetting that). Or any of the other expanded universe stuff Disney wisely disregarded.
Lol!

That would of made a great press pack release for the film in question. I think you'd better jet off to California and join the Walt Disney Co.

I'm glad to hear that you think this wonderful film is "well constructed and reasonably thoughtful". This film is complete and utter trash.

And it's good to see more people on YT ripping into the film. It deserves to be dumped in the trash compactor and forgotten about.

If I was Lucas I'd take that cash, find an island somewhere and sit in all day watching netflix and porn and enjoy a lengthy retirement from the toy business.

after the next film , Geroge could say he is doing a trilogy and i bet the chances will be high that people will complain about them and praise these films just like they have with the prequels.

as you said some will never be happy no matter how good the film turns out.

If Disney offered me the cash I'd take it,
That said they haven't because I'm just one of those awkward old buggers who likes going online and expressing a different opinion. Even if he's mistaken for a vodka swilling drunk for expressing it.

I just don't do the whole groupthink thing. I still like force awakens. I've seen it on the small screen numerous times now and my opinion hasn't changed since I went to the first screening. I doubt it'll change here.

I think this probably sums up my thoughts on the controversy over last jedi...

I suspect Lucas is laughing at all these millennials that just buy into a Disneyfied version of Star Wars. I know I would be.

Doubtful.

After what I've seen trebor.

Two films that make Spaceballs look like a masterclass in comedy/sci-fi film making.
