Default The Black Hole (1979)

The Black Hole (1979)
While Unkle Walt jumps on the Star wars band wagon,The Black Hole stays clear of the Saturday morning Flash Gordon serial antics and goes for a more decidedly adult themed story. Also there is a top flight of heavy weight acting talent on display as well with Maximilian Schell, Robert Forster (who was such an underrated actor before doing Jackie Brown, and was so good in Delta Force as Abdul Rafai), Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Perkins, and Ernest Borgnine. Not only that but even the voice actors of the robots are done by the Roddy McDowall as Voice of V.I.N.CENT and Slim Pickens as Voice of Old B.O.B. The film starts with the crew of the USS Palomino come across the spaceship USS Cygnus which had been thought to have been lost in space. When the crew of USS Palomino board Cygnus, what they think is abandoned space ship turns out to inhabited by Maximilian Schell as Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his crew of dome faced robots which fly the ship and his army of sentry robots lead by his right hand android Maximilian,a giant Mecha stylyed flying machine that seems to be suffering some psychotic disorder. Dr. Hans Reinhardt is mad megalomaniac who is going to take the USS Cygnus straight into a black hole, thus proving all his crazy theories. The music by John Barry is a great atmospheric piece that doesn't rely on the usual anthemic nonsense you get from John Williams who's score's for a period all seemed to sound the same. Black Hole although a damn sight more adult in tone than say Star Wars is does occasionally stop for a bout of lazer quest every so often and im sure at the time of release (I first saw this at the cinema) was maybe thought to be a bit talky in parts compared to its counter parts, but its a really interesting film, and there can not be many kids movies that end with a vision of hell.

Definitely in my top 5 sci-fi films. I would say you should definitely see it. However i'd hate it if you were underwhelmed by it.

I'll definitely check it out eventually. I may save it for Sci-Fi September, although don't want to be branded 'SeptemberEye'

That won't happen, SeptEye.

It would make a terrific addition to your September sci-fi viewing?

Are you hoping to make them all new to you films?

Default A Boy and His Dog (1975)

A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Directed by L.Q. Jones, who has had a major career as a character actor, and will be familiar to horror movie fans from 1982's The Beast Within as Sheriff Bill Pool.Adapted from Harlan Ellison's short story from 1969 called A Boy and his Dog.Set in the post apocalyptic world, which doesn't look to dissimilar to Mad Max 2,where you have bands of killers scouring the wasteland looking for food and there only entertainment being old porno movies which will cost you the price of a can of food to watch.Don Johnson as Vic is a randy young man who with the help of Tim McIntire doing the voice of Blood, finds young women to rape to satisfy his raging hormones.Vic and Blood are telepathically linked together, which means they are able to talk to each other.Vic is a simple minded and under educated boy where as Blood is an highly educated dog who knows pretty much everything about politics and history(how he gained this knowledge is never revealed,we just take it on board that Blood is much more intelligent than his human counter part). What sells the film and makes it work is the relationship between Don Johnson and Blood, and allot of this is down to the voice acting of Tim McIntire, who manages to convey the thought process of the dog you see on screen and what he his thinking. It could so easily of turned into a Disney talking dog movie (saying that I do enjoy those Shaggy Dog movies) but with a young Don Johnson in an early film role,he plays it really well and you do get this feeling that these two characters are actually interacting with each other. I grant you that A Boy and His Dog (1975) is a very marmite movie,I remember catching it on BBC 2 back in 1980's and being pretty blown away by its uniqueness and some rather witty dialogue between Vic and Blood. That said the story itself is very misogynistic, particularly the ending where Bloods last line summons up the duo's opinion of women.

I honestly haven't decided yet. I guess it depends what is released before then too as I may pick up some Sci-Fi films I've seen before but may want to add to my September viewing.

Default Death Race 2000 (1975)

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Only could Roger Corman come up with Wacky Races meets The Cars That Ate Paris meets Le Mans, with an assembly of some of the most cartoonist characters ever created and there wacky cars all adorned with gadgets and crazy looking body kits. Its hard not to like a film when you got characters like Sylvester Stallone as "Machine-Gun" Joe Viterbo,Mary Woronov as "Calamity" Jane Kelly,Roberta Collins as Matilda the Hun,Martin Kove as Ray "Nero the Hero" Lonagan and of course David Carradine as Frankenstein the people's champion.Of course its all cartoonish violence, and done in the best possible taste. It's euthanasia day,so all the nurses put the old folks in there wheel chairs in the middle of the road all ready to be killed and rack up some points for David Carradine as Frankenstein, but Frank has other ideas as he avoids the old folks and takes out the nurses instead, thus proving not only has a Frank got a social conscience but he would make a great Secretary of State for Health. And Corman throws in some cod politics about the State running the race to keep the people amused and stupid I guess and also solving the over population problem by running over a few folks for points. And of course with any totalitarian state you got to have a rebellion, who try to sabotage the race by blowing up the competitors. Directed by Paul Bartel, the film over comes its budgetary restraints with some clever filming, using deserted streets and open roads and plenty of fast editing to capture those moments of roadkill. There's plenty of black comic moments, take the three guys playing chicken, the last one leaves it just to late as the last guy down the man hole puts the cover back just as the third guy is about to jump down as well. Corman knows that audiences back then wanted plenty of violence, dumb ass comedy and some sexy ladies like Mary Woronov, not to mention an early Stallone appearance (his acting hasn't improved much) Also this was must have rent back in the days of videotape rental.

Default Breakaway 50min Episode aired 4 September 1975

Space: 1999
Breakaway 4 September 1975

Just recently started re watching this Gerry And Sylvia Anderson series again,It brought back many a fine memory of watching this as a kid on HTV (as it was back then in regional television land) usually on just before World Of Sport with Dickie Davies (when will Steven Toast get to do that Dickie Davis Bio film?) again there would be regional variations of its time slot im very sure. One thing that struck me as I watched the very first episode, was how amazing the model effects work was,its no surprise that kids of my era would drool over the toys that came out on the back of all the Anderson's tv shows. But my favourite was definitely the Eagle 1 Spaceship from Space 1999,that was a superb model/toy that looked the business and was just so icon for the whole show.Needless to say I never got that toy on Christmas day,so that's another blighted mark on my otherwise happy childhood. The effects in general were excellent, but I think more so in Space 1999 because it all interacted so well with an actual cast as opposed to bunch of puppets, except the hand close ups of course.Breakaway being the first in the series sees the introduction of John Koenig played Martin who is to takeover command of moon-base from Philip Madoc as Commander Gorski who in his brief appearance seems to have some sort of Welsh / Russian accent going on.Its a great story opener which has earth dumping its nuclear waste in space and the hideous side effects that this could have.In fact the mysterious illness that effects the astronauts gives them a zombie like appearance, and the whole tone of the episode is very downbeat and bleak considering its the opening episode.Still a fine start to a great series.
