Superman IV: The Quest for Peace 1987 Superman IV: The Quest for Peace 1987 Or the day Superman joined CND, its seems quite apt now looking back that Superman addresses the nuclear arms race, giving a rousing speech at the United Nations and seemingly solves the problem by grabbing every nuclear missile that is launched and sticking it in the biggest net in the world (although it does look remarkably like a bag of vibrators ) and throw the whole lot into the sun.Job done no more nuclear weapons, problem solved.why didn't we think of that in the first place. Of course the only people not happy about this is the arms dealers,Jim Broadbent as a French arms dealer? and of course Lex Luther who manages to come up with a cunning plan to not only get the world back to buying nuclear weapons but also destroy the man of steel. While certainly not the best of the bunch, this surely has to be Superman 2 "Come to me, son of Jor-El! Kneel before Zod! " Quest is surprisingly fun and very watchable entry, probably not the film Reeve would of wanted to leave Superman, judging by the amount of stories about Cannon Films cutting the budget.I mean who knew that 42nd street and the United Nations buildings looked just like an Industrial Park in Milton Keynes. The other chink in its armour maybe the fact that Nuclear Man looks a lot like a rather camp male stripper rather than an arch nemesis of Superman,in fact there battle in space is slightly no more than hand bags at dawn as they both seem to incapable of putting up much of a fight.Although the first Nuclear Man that Luther creates was played by Clive Mantle from Casualty, and looks equally stupid, luckily this ended up on the cutting room floor. With DC getting up and in are faces again with there new films, its nice to go back and re-evaluate these movies.

Runaway (1984 film)
The main problem with Michael Crichton's look at the future and its world full of domesticated robots is that most of them are not exactly scary looking, in fact, the majority of them look like the kind of robots you use to get in the early episodes of Robot Wars, most are just glorified looking Henry vacuum cleaners that give people electric shocks. The fact that you need a special police force just to disarm robots that go a bit mental, would suggest that your better off without them and that the lazy buggers of the future should do their own cooking and be cleaning instead of relying on these rubbish looking plastic boxes that seem to be programmed to do the most mundane jobs around the house yet still manage to have the capability to use a magnum or knife on their human owners.Well, its a god job then that on his day off from being a private investigator that Tom Selleck is a member of the runaway squad, sent out to deal with these pesky malfunctioning robots. Not helping matters much is a suave looking Gene Simmons as Dr. Charles Luther, who has managed to get hold of some computer chips that overrides the computer's safety features and turns them into pesky killers. The problem with predicting the future is that the future eventually comes around and when you compare the two they do not seem that different apart from the fact there seems to be a lot of wonky robots on a killing spree. And even though most of the robots resemble Dusty Bin from the gameshow 3-2-1, the most lethal critter is one nicknamed the spider for obvious reasons, and while it does look like its made out of a Meccano set this lethal bleeder tends to jump onto its intended victim, stabs them in the neck and then promptly explodes, taking out themselves and the poor sucker they have latched onto.Effects wise this is no Terminator, in fact, most of the time it is only step up from your average Roger Corman flick meets Battlestar Gallactica in the special effects department.Selleck is his usual affable and good-humoured self while Mr Simmons makes for a splendid bad guy, as he sneers his way through the role splendidly and comes to a sticky end like all good villains should.Runaway is a fun film, only marred by some tacky effects and the 80's hairdos of some of the female cast.

Battle Beyond The Stars (1980, Jimmy T. Murakami ) So this is what that Walton boy did when he escaped to that thar Hollywood. Never volunteer for anything is the golden rule ... but when our boy sets off to find some help, he finds it's a buyer's galaxy as everyone he does meet has his/her/its price Slightly more violent than I remembered. Slightly. Sybil Danning's chest. Recommended.

Watching that Valerian & The Lost Sense Of Purpose . Since it reminds me of the French scifi graphic novels I read then ... it is pretty in places and I will rewatch it. The Fifth Element's not got a great plot either imo Ahem. There's no sense of danger or gravity in places.

Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone (1983, Lamont Johnson) Filmed in that thar 3D? Elmer Bernstein's score seems to imitate several others I notice. Some money spent on this surely as the proliferation of FX/models/costumes etc is ... prolific . Sleazier than I remembered ... A hefty bounty draws a hunter into a partnership with an old army colleague and a Molly Ringwald. Who cares? Michael Ironside is the baddie. If this isn't enough .... then frankly I'm at a loss Are you on the right forum??
