The Thing (1982, John Carpenter)

"It's gone Macready ..."

A film that has stood the test of time simply by being itself. Exposition was obviously something that Carpenter had recently become allergic to ... as we open in the middle of a chase and it ends ... ambiguously to say the least.
A group of blokes find that a dog is not man's best friend, when a neighbouring camp literally land in their laps.
Having finally seen the film at the cinema, I can only imagine what the audience thought back then. Well ... maybe not as I left feeling very despondent tbh. Ahem. I recommend this film highly and always have

Default Without Warning (1980)

IN the wake of an alien invasion, its a proven fact that big muscled macho men wielding there enormous weapons are no use at all, what you really need in time of crisis and appending disaster is a bunch of craggy faced old men with drinking problems and religious issues. Well luckily enough Without Warning has plenty of grumpy old men to give those pesky aliens a good kicking, who could ask for more than Jack Palance ,Martin Landau ,Neville Brand ,Ralph Meeker and Cameron Mitchell, all in the same movie,I'm surprised there was any scenery left with the amount of screen chewing these dirty old bastards get up to. Still probably not as much as Palance and Landau do in Jack Sholders Alone In The Dark, nutter on the loose flick, where Palance gets into punk and Landau just gurns a lot while setting fire to things. Any how Warning has a good old school alien running amok, played by monster actor for hire Kevin Peter Hall, and lots of flying starfish with teeth for the actors to avoid. In fact the alien has the look of a 50s throwback mixed with a bit of old school Star Trek for good measure. All in all a fun if derivative monster on the loose flick with a decent amount of blood letting for the gore hounds among you.

i have a cheap chinese bootleg dvd of it, I think it's from a really old Laserdisc release or possibly a VHS. However I did notice how Corman re-used James Horner's score for Battle Beyond The Stars for the film and also George Peppard's tit ship is re-used.

Always confused this film with Ice Pirates when I was a Kid.
