How do you watch your Giallo movies?

I've been collecting giallo since the early 00s, so over the years I have amassed a healthy collection of giallos.

So after watching them as soon as I got them, I decided one year to watch them in year order. So I start from Bava‘s I Vampiri, which is a German hardbox import, and then from that in year order, before moving on to the 70s.

It's really interesting seeing how the genre progressed, and where particular phases started, thanks to a particular film whether it‘s from Italy, or from Hollywood.

It can also be done with certain directors, such as Argento, where you can start with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, right up to (if you want) Giallo.

I think it’s a good way to re-enjoy the films, and you might appreciate certain films that you didn’t care for the first time round.

I pick a director, and watch his films chronologically.

I was going to say With My Eyes

but seriously, no order, just what I'm in the mood for.

Well done Baseball Fury, You must be a devil with the ladies.

Delirium 5th February 2013 02:36 PM

I watch whatever takes me. I don't do things in order, as a rule, as films aren't necessarily released in the order of a director's filmography. I'm fully able to skip back and forth between a particular director's work or different directors and still develop my understanding and appreciation of film. Fair enough if you're revisiting their works which are already in your collection.

But then I no longer obsessively collect either, I got out of that game years ago. If something in a director's filmography doesn't interest me, I don't buy/keep it.

With my black (or red depending on the mood) leather gloves on. ;)
Seriously,I just watch any giallo as soon as I can lay my hands on it,in no particular order.

platostotal 5th February 2013 07:38 PM

Something I've done a couple of times with a Giallo I know well is to watch it in Italian WITHOUT subs, so as to get the 'feel' without the distraction of subs since I know what happens and what's being said, odd but true.

Demdike@Cult Labs 5th February 2013 09:23 PM

With my favourite bottle of Justerini & Brooks.

Sam 5th February 2013 09:36 PM

No particular order but, in the main, I do find giallo films more rewarding the second time around for some reason. I didn't care at all for 'The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh' the first time I watched it, for example, but really enjoyed it when I watched the Shameless release a few months ago.

Delirium 6th February 2013 08:13 AM

I've been rewatching a lot of gialli recently with the missus, as she's developed a taste for them - which I'm loving, as once upon a time she had no interest. I also think they more than stand up to repeat viewing.

The amusing thing is, as I originally saw them years ago, in some cases I actually forgot whodunnit!

Demoncrat 6th February 2013 10:40 AM

Whenever I get the chance. Or a new one. Yes, I rewatch the paltry number I have A LOT.

While I don't mind subs, I always watch with the English tracks as I'm hopelessly addicted to the dubbing.
(It's right up there with the cinematography and scores, on why I'm fond of gialli.)

It use to take me out the movies originally - as I'd try and remember what film/character I first heard a certain voice from.

But I love hearing the same old voices now and esp like it when someone like Edwige for example is given a well spoken English accent.

Yep, the dubbing is always worth checking out, Theresa Russell voicing Daria in Tenebrae for example.

Yep, nice to find cool stuff in the dubbing like Theresa Russell voicing Daria in Tenebrae.

Mojo 7th February 2013 06:15 PM

Love gialli! ( c'mon Shameless! ) Preferably with a nice chilled bottle of Rose wine.

ReturnToZero 9th February 2013 02:24 PM

Like Beyond72 i also prefer the dubbed versions but if there is an italian track with english subs available on the disc i usually watch it that way the second time.

The reason i bought Shameless' Don't Torture a Duckling for example when already owned the BU disc.

Delirium 9th February 2013 03:13 PM

Personally I prefer the Italian tracks with subs. It depends. If it means I get to hear the original voices in most cases, I'll go for that dub.

Last few I've watched were with the Italian soundtrack (but I've seen them before in the English dubs). Last night I watched Opera in English as I only have the Anchor Bay release at the mo (holding out for an Arrow Blu Ray!). Thing is the Arrow has the additional dubs, so I may have to pick it up if the Blu isn't forthcoming.

Stephen@Cult Labs 9th February 2013 04:57 PM

For me, It all depends on the actors in the films. If there's an English speaking star, etc, I'll listen to the English track, otherwise I'll go for Italian with English subs, then of course there's the rare occasions when I can't be bothered "reading" a movie, then I'll watch it dubbed in English even if there's no-one speaking English in the film.

Edgeworth 9th February 2013 06:23 PM

Subs when i'm alone, dubbed with my girlfriend 'cause she is too lazy to read.

I do like the old dubs though, very different to modern dubbing. Everyone has over the top accents or are just plain wooden voice actors.

Hawkmonger 9th February 2013 08:32 PM

I tend to watch Giallo in the middle of the night when no one's awake. Every creak as the cat stalks the hall add's to the atmosphere and can sometimes make the experience scary for once.

Did anyone get the SFC science fiction special?
There is a small article where they interview a dvd/blu ray collector, and he basically says that Shameless dvds are softcore porn, with a bit of gore, which he refuses to watch as they're not films, they're a waste!

If he refuses to watch them, how can he make judgement on those dvds which he has no knowledge of?

Granted there have been a small batch of films which have a bit of sex in, but the rest of the collection cosists of classic who dunnit thrillers.
