The difference with America though is that anything nit getting an R over there is commercial suicide.
Most cinemas will not show NC17(our 18) on a wide release or with any kind of marketing, and I believe that a lot of Blockbusters, Wal Marts and Targets won't stock them. it's a much harsher system, especially considering the MPAA are essentially just a completely anonymous bunch of suburban family makers!

I think the BBFC come out as extreme liberals after the near medieval approach of the MPAA as seen in "This Film is Not Rated Yet". It reminded me of something I read about deSade years ago. Apparently you could only read his books in the presence of a Bishop to stop you being corrupted at one time.

I was sorting out some old papers today and came across the BBFC Guidance Handbook from the mid 90's and it's amazing to compare the BBFC back then with the BBFC of today. We've certainly moved on since the days of Ferman. Reading the graphic descriptions as to what sex acts are permitted or not permitted at 18 was borderline pornographic and....strangely arousing...

Compared to the mpaa, the BBFC actually do a pretty good job. Where the Yanks are lucky is that they have a constitutionally protected right to the freedom of speech which means they can release films without mpaa ratings. Hence the wonderful uncut special editions we have been importing all these years. Plus, I suspect if you killed a bunch of people in america and tried to blame violent horror movies the excuse wouldent wash, and you would still be held accountable for your actions. (though the recent hysteria over videogames is leading me to change that opinion.)

The bbfc today isnt all that bad, though I suspect my view is based on growing up through james fermans dictatorial reign, which was a pretty awful time by all accounts. The exorcist and texas chainsaw massacre were banned because Ferman decided he knew better than psychiatrists, sociologists and his own board who would have had no problems passing these films uncut.... hell theres probably hundreds of horror stories regarding mr ferman.
