Not sure. MacFarlane has been quoted as saying no show should run past seven seasons and feels that the show has become stale. He clearly wants to shake things up, but word is that team FG are judging fan reactions as..

*spoiler*

..Brian's current replacement, Vinnie, a wise-cracking Italian dog voiced by Soprano's actor Tony Sirico is only on a temp contract with the option of extending him. Also there are leaked future episodes with Brian in the title, although they could be flashbacks.

I dunno, I watched the clip and found it all rather blasé. Brian's a major character and the most sophisticated of the Griffins, I think to kill him off permanently would be a shot in the foot for the show. It wouldn't surprise me if it's just a cruel prank. I guess the ratings will speak for themselves.

But that's the exact reasoning for such shark-jumping tactics like this, which FG has mocked in the past. Replacing a key character to inject supposed freshness into the show is often seen as the death knell in a tv series.

I dislike FG but caught the Brian episode just to see what happened. It was rubbish. Really poorly conceived and, aside from some typically racist Native American stuff, didn't even seem to bother with any jokes.

I agree with you Paul. I'm a fan of Family Guy myself mind, but this does seem a little out of the blue. I watched the episode where Brian dies and it did seem a little...underwhelming. For such a big character, you would have thought his death would have been much bigger.

Sure, having a character die could change the whole show and keep it nice and fresh, but when he's replaced almost straight away with a character who seems to be pretty similar, I'm not convinced. Surely, if they wanted to change the dynamic of the show they should have at least a good few episodes without anyone filling in Brian's shoes, or even just adding two dogs so there's some sort of rivalry between Brian and Vinny.

Yes, I agree. I know FG is known for its sardonic approach, but Brian was a much-loved character, and to take him out in such a way seemed more than a little cold. But again, that's probably the FG thing. Although I've only seen five seasons of South Park, I watched the infamous Chef episode and was actually shocked at how mean-spirited it was. I know they had a fall out with Isaac Hayes, but the whole scene seemed petty and cruel.

No reason why it can't be funny, but to be so dismissive is like two fingers up to the loyal fans who, animation or not, have grown to love the characters over the years.

I lost interest in South Park years ago (not long after the film came out), tried watching an episode recently and couldn't believe how shite it was, didn't even raise a smile, let alone a laugh!

South Park is still excellent Rik! Give it another go. It's satirical, funny and crude. The chef episode was slightly mean spirited at times but it was clearly done out is of a real sense of disappointment at Hayes' hypocrisy.
