The enterprise is about to end its search when a message is received from Korby asking Kirk and Chapel to beam down as Korby has found something of great importance to the federation. Kirk beams down with chapel and a couple of security men. It's not long before they security men are killed in what looks like an accident. A struggle insures when Korby won't let Kirk contact the enterprise and korbys assistance is killed but we find out that he was an android as the rest of the people with Korby, which include Andrea and the giant Ruk.

The enterprise and her crew discover an exact duplicate of earth, Kirk, Spock, Bones and Yeoman Rand beam down to investigate and two red shirts ( who end up dying, what a surprise). What they discover is a desolate wasteland, with the only survivors being children, it's not long before we find out there was some type of plaque that killed all the grumps( what the children call grown ups). The crew are also infected and start to age rapidly, it's up to McCoy and Spock to find a cure before they all die of all age, matters are made worse by me of the girls has taken a fancy to Kirk (she we also die soon as we learn from once the children leave adolescent they catch the disease) and the children hampering their work. 7/10

The enterprise makes a supply run to Tantalus V which is facility for the criminal insane. As the enterprise leaves a escaped patient who has hidden himself in what looked like a huge pill bottle over powers a technician. He makes his way to the bridge with a stolen phaser and demands asylum, he is soon subdued by Spock using the Vulcan nerve pinch. We soon find out that the stowaway is Simon van Gelder assistant to dr Adams who runs the facility. This raises suspicions and the enterprise changes course back to Tantalus V. Kirk beam down with psychiatrist Helen Noel.

Beaming down they are met by a smiling Adams and shows the device which injured van Gelder which is used to calm inmates and is harmless on low settings but van Gelder experimented o himself at higher settings.

Back on the ship we see the first use if Vulcan mind meld, which Spock uses on van Gelder from this Spock discovers Adams is insane and is using the device to control people. Spock at this point try's to,warn the captain but the base force field has been activated making communication and beaming down impossible.

Back at the base Kirk gets Noel to test the device on himself, she makes the captain believe that an encounter at a Christmas party went further than I did, at the point Adams enters and takes control brainwashing Kirk and making him believe that he is deeply in love with Noel. Eventually Kirk with the help of Noel Managers to shut the forcefield down letting Kirk and a security team beam down. Power is restored but Adams who was left unconscious in a fight with Kirk in the treatment room when Kirk was making his way to turn off the power has had his mind wiped an is now a vegetable. 7.8/10

The enterprise is mapping star systems when navigator Bailey spots a large glowing cube, Spock orders a red alert and sets the enterprise to investigate, Kirk who is having a psychical is not informed by McCoy of the emergency until the physical is ended, this naturally upsets Kirk who rushes to the bridge. The cube blocks the enterprises path and starts emitting harmful radiation which forces Kirk to destroy the object. Very quickly after the cube is destroyed a huge sphere appears that dwarfs the enterprise, the captain of the ship Balok informs the crew that the enterprise will be destroyed for its transgressions to the first federation .

At this point Kirk informs Balok that the ship is equip with a corbomite device which destroys any one who attacks the ship(it's a bluff on Kirks part). A smaller ship emerges from the large ship and moves the enterprise into first federation space, Balok informs Kirk that the cre will be moved to this smaller vessel and the enterprise destroyed. The enterprise managers to break free of the smaller ship and in the course of this the smaller ship is crippled, Kirk beams over with Mcoy and Bailey to offer help, once on the ship we discover that they saw Balok is nothing but an elaborate puppet and the real Balok is a small child like alien ( played by Clint Howard of evil speak fame)that was only testing the crew of the enterprise to see if they were as truly peaceful as they made themselves out to be. Bailey stays behind so Balok can understand humanity better. 8.5/10

The Menagerie

The only two part episode of TOS which includes scenes from the unaired pilot which had Christopher Pike in charge of the enterprise

The enterprise arrives at starbase 11 because of a massage Spock picked up from his old captain Christopher Pike. beaming down the base commander informs Kirk that he highly doubts that Pike sent the message because of his injuries, its not long before we find this to be true and it was Spock that faked the message, who not long after beaming down to the starbase kidnaps Pike and steals the enterprise. Kirk soon catches up with his stolen ship but the ship is set on course to the planet Talos IV which is forbidden to goto by federation law and is the only law punishable by death . a court martial is set to find out why Spock did what he did.

at the court martial a device is used to show spocks memories and we see the events of a mission when Pike was in command of the Enterprise. the mission evolved the enterprise getting a distress call from the then undiscovered Talos IV. beaming down they find a group a survivors who include a young woman, suddenly the survivors disappear apart from the woman who is off with the captain exploring a cave and is captured by some big headed aliens, at this point we learn the images are being sent from Talos and not the computer. we soon learn that PIke has been taking prisoner with the woman to produce offspring so the aliens can repopulate there race, we soon learn that the aliens can produce powerful illusions with the power of there minds,(we find they have used this power to make the woman look beautiful who is really disfigured because of the crash landing) PIke manages to convince them to let him go and offers the help of the federation but they decline in case the samething that happened to them befalls the federation. its a this point Kirk understands why Spock kidnapped Pike and set course for Talos IV, with there powers they could give Pike a normal life with the young woman from the mission all those years ago, Pike is allowed to beam down and is met by the aliens and the young woman. 7.4/10

Balance Of Terror

one of my favourite episodes which introduces the Romulans and also Mark Lenard as the romulan captain, who is better knowing as Sarek, spocks father.

The episode opens with a happy event with Kirk conducting a wedding for two young crew members, the happy events are cut short when a distress call is gotten from a outpost near the romulan boarder, the enterprise sets course for the outpost. coming out of warp they find they outpost heavily damaged with only the commander of the base still alive, soon after an unknown ship decloaks destroying the base and disappears. Kirk is informed by Lieutenant Stiles that its a romulan ship, which he recognises by the markings , whick he knows because he lost family members if romulan war.

a battle of wits and a game of cat and mouse ensures between Kirk and the romulan captain. at one point the enterprise manages to intercept a message from the romulan ship, which shows the they look identical to Vulcans, this installs distrust and bigotry from Styles. the cat and mouse game continues and the enterprise is heavily damaged and her weapons are inoperative, the phasers are brought back online by Spock who also rescues Styles. The romulan ship is heavily damaged in the enterprise's attack. Kirk offers to save the Romulan captain and his crew but he declines and the ship explodes. the episode ends with Kirk informing the young woman that just got married that her husband was killed in the attack. 8.7/10

always enjoyed this episode with its cold war feeling of paranoia and cat and mouse game of those submariner war movies.

With trading the original series into cex with preordering the limited edition 50 anniversary boxer will be reviewing so some TNG

Encounter at Farpoint

The newley commissioned starship Enterprise under the command of captain jean luc Picard is on its way to farpoint station to pick up it's remainig crew which includes second in command William riker, Chief medical officer Beverley Crusher (whos husband was best friend with Picard before he died under Picard's command ) and blind navigator Geordie LaForge.

Before the enterprise can reach it's destination its surrounded by a powerful forcefield and the enterprise crew and the whole of humanity is placed on trial by the omnipresent/ godlike Q. The trial takes place in 22nd post nuclear horror court room, Picard manages to convince Q to test him and his crew that humanity is not a savage and barbaric race. Q let's them go saying that they will be tested at farpoint station. Arrving at farpoint station the rest of the crew is picked up and Riker informed of what's happened, a!so a special guest is transported by shuttle by Data as they don't like use transporters they special person turns out to be 138 year old Leonard"Bones " McCoy.

We soon find something is not quite right with farpoint station with things seeming appear if by magic and Deanna Troi can sense someone or something in great pain. Not long after a mysterious ship appears and fires on the Bandai village ( natives of the planet the base Is located on) but makes an effort not to attack farpoint, one of the leaders is beamed over to the mysterious ship, riker forms an away team and beams over to rescue him, once there troi we sense something similar to what she felt at farpoint but greatly magnified and this time its anger and not fear, while back on the Enterprise Q reappears telling Picard he should destroy the ship at this point the away team reappear and tell Picard that the ship is not a ship but a lifeform that has come to rescue its mate which the bandii have been keeping prisoner, Picard orders the deflector dish to be modified to give the creature on the ground energy it needs to escape and this point Q tells Picard it was to easy a task and he will find another task for them, but before he can make good on his threat he is removed by his own peopel.

It all looks stunning on blue ray, but the whole story is a little s!ow, with some terrible dialogue and poor acting from Marina SIrtis (Troi ) who has a constipated look on her face. 6.7/10
