For lovers of silent films, BBC4 have got a treat on Sunday, November 5th from 8pm - 9:40pm October: Ten Days That Shook the World | Radio Times "Despite being made to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the overthrow of Kerensky's provisional government, this impersonal tribute to the proletariat found little official or critical favour in the Soviet Union. Bitingly satirical and overtly political, it marked Sergei Eisenstein's most ambitious experiment in intellectual montage. However, despite such memorable set pieces as the assault on the Winter Palace, the raising of the bridge and the toppling of Alexander III's statue, the obscurity of some of its imagery and the uncomfortable blend of symbolism and realism rendered it less dramatically unified, thematically consistent and emotionally overwhelming than its predecessor, The Battleship Potemkin. Summary Fact-based silent historical drama recreating the key events of the Soviet revolution, beginning with the downfall of the monarchy andf Lenin's return from exile, through the counter-revolution to the final end of the provisional government, placing the Bolsheviks firmly in control of the country. Starring Nikolay Popov and Vasili Nikandrov."

It looks like next Friday evening (November 10th) into Saturday morning has been designated Beatles Night on BBC4! 9:30pm - 10:30pm (Repeated at 02:10) : Storyville: How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin Summary How the band's music may have contributed toward the collapse of the Soviet Union. Millions of people in the country became passionate fans of the Beatles during the 1960s, leading the authorities to grow wary of the seditious potential of rock 'n' roll, destroy the group's records and ban their music. Despite their efforts, a generation of youngsters had come to enjoy the culture of the Cold War enemy and defected emotionally from the Soviet system. 10:30pm - 11:30pm: Sgt Pepper's Musical Revolution - with Howard Goodall Review If the Beatles’ defining album were a car, this would be the Haynes manual, an exploded diagram showing how all its many and beautiful parts fit together. Presenter Howard Goodall is a wizard mechanic, polishing up each chorus and key change so we appreciate it anew. To help him he has access to the original Sgt Pepper master tapes as well as unused takes and those scraps of Beatles-y backchat (“Ringo, keep it a bit straighter at the end”), the result being very much for the benefit of anyone interested in pop music’s perfect moment. We learn, for instance, that there are seven pianos and two organs playing that thundering final chord of A Day in the Life. Strawberry Fields Forever (not on the album, of course, but part of the same sessions) was apparently stitched together from takes recorded a week apart that used different instruments. George Martin sounds a little weary as we hear him say: “Strawberry Fields Forever take seven… remix from four-track take six.” Summary The composer explores why the Beatles' 50-year-old album is still revered as an innovative, revolutionary and influential release. With the help of out-takes, studio conversations between the band and never-heard-before outside of Abbey Road, Howard gets `under the bonnet' of the album, taking the music apart and reassembling it to reveal how it works. Producer George Martin and his team constructed the album sound by sound, layer by layer - a formula that became the norm for just about every rock act who followed. 11:30pm - 12:30am: Arena: Magical Mystery Tour Revisited Review by Jane Rackham On Boxing Day 1967, BBC1 screened a Beatles film that to most of the country was completely incomprehensible. “It’s not surprising,” George Harrison said later, “it was like an elaborate little home movie” with no plot or script but a lot of self-indulgent spontaneity and Pythonesque madness. Which is probably why so many viewers were outraged and confused in equal measure. This absorbing, if sprawling, documentary puts Magical Mystery into context, with snippets about the underground movement, reflections from Paul and Ringo, out-takes from the film and comments from people who took part or were mystified when they saw it on their telly. Summary The making of the Beatles' self-directed TV movie Magical Mystery Tour, which originally aired on BBC1 on Boxing Day 1967 at the height of the band's popularity - but was greeted with disdain by the media and many viewers. The programme explores the creation of the surreal tale and investigates why it inspired such a furious critical reaction, and also asks whether opinions about the film have changed in subsequent years. With contributions by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Peter Fonda, Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes and Paul Merton. Sat 11 Nov 1:10am - 2:10am: Sings the Beatles Summary A look back through the BBC's archives at memorable covers of classic Beatles songs. Included are a performance of Day Tripper by Sandie Shaw, Shirley Bassey's version of Something, the Carpenters' rendition of Help!, Oasis's reinvention of I Am the Walrus, and Joe Cocker's chart-topping interpretation of With a Little Help from My Friends. Plus, Paul McCartney's solo performance of Lady Madonna.

'Lord of the Rings' TV Series in the Works | Hollywood Reporter Is there anything left to be told in the 'Lord Of The Rings' story, unless it delves deeper into the whole 'Lord Of The Rings Universe', and features things like 'The Silmarillion' and 'The History Of Middle-Earth'?

The U.K. settled for a poor mpeg2 digital codec for freeview SD instead of Mp4, the bandwidth on channels like the above can get sub-Youtube on mobile quality, no comparison with a live broadcast on BBC HD or even SD.
