GREMLINS Animated Series / Nerdist

"One of the movies responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating—too scary for PG but not graphic enough for R—is getting turned into an animated series. Joe Dante’s 1984 film Gremlins is getting a cartoon some 35 years later. The news broke back in 2019, when WarnerMedia ordered a 10-episode prequel to the 1984 classic. The animated series will focus on Gizmo and a young version of his original owner, Mr. Wing, played in the original film by Keye Luke. Tze Chun, a veteran of TV series like Gotham and Once Upon a Time, is attached to write and executive produce.

Now, we have word of who’ll be voicing the characters on the animated series, titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. As reported by Variety (via Gizmodo), the cast will include Izaac Wang as young star Sam Wing; his parents will be played by TV and film vets B.D. Wong (of Law & Order and Jurassic Park fame) and Ming-Na Wen (of ER, The Mandalorian). On the other side of the good-and-evil spectrum, Matthew Rhys (of The Americans and Perry Mason) will voice the series’ main antagonist; he’s an “English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic,” and who aims to seize li’l Gizmo.

Here is the official synopsis:
In the animated television adaptation, we travel back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
Amblin Entertainment will produce the series, written by Tze Chun and featuring producers of things like The Americans, Animaniacs, and Teen Titans Go!

The series will head to HBO Max at a yet undisclosed date. Dante’s original film—produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Chris Columbus—was a massive hit, thanks in no small part to the amazing anamatronic creatures by Chris Walas, and the adorable lead creature, Gizmo. Infamously, Columbus’ original script was a straight horror movie and had Gizmo turn into the lead evil Gremlin to be destroyed by Billy Peltzer, but Spielberg interceded and saved the little guy from the slaughter.

And it’s a good thing he did; though we haven’t had a new adventure featuring the cuddly Mogwai and its scaly green progeny since 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch—itself a half-parody of the original—Gremlins remains a cult favorite. It’s still considered one of Warner Bros’ biggest success stories, grossing over $153 million against a budget of only $11 million. That’s equivalent to almost $400 million in today’s dollars. That’s probably why a script for a third film keeps getting kicked around.

We’re gonna guess the animated series won’t be super scary, but the iconic design of the titular baddies would look pretty great in cartoon form. Maybe the series will finally explain the incredibly vague rule about feeding them after midnight. And, like, what about time zones?"

HORROR ENTERTAINMENT NEWS
Tim Burton’s Netflix Series Will Focus On ‘Wednesday’ Addams as A Psychic Detective
written by Trey Hilburn III

February 19, 2021
Wednesday

Early last year, we reported that Tim Burton wanted to make Wednesday Addams a lead character in her own series. Wednesday Addams is certainly a bit of an idol and icon. The character was made famous in Charles Addams’ television series that ran form 1964 to 1966 and then was reintroduced in 1991 in The Addams Family film and then once again in the sequel, Addams Family Values in 1993. Now, Tim Burton will bring the Addams Family back again by way of their morbidly curious daughter, Wednesday Addams.

While this was Burton’s idea, both Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have given the series its actual story. Tim Buron will direct the entire first 8-episode season of the series. The live-action series will focus on Wednesday Addams as she becomes accustom to her budding psychic abilities, which she uses to assist in a solving a run of murders plaguing the her town and her school – Nevermore Academy. Now, she has a lot of multitasking on her hands – all this while also doing regular old school and growing up stuff as well. But there is no real “regular” when it comes to the Addams, Right? Empire also reveals that Wednesday will also use her psychic abilities to get to the bottom of a supernatural event that has a long history with The Addams Famiy.

“When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday we were struck, like an arrow from a crossbow, right in our hearts. They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story. We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series. Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deitz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy.” Netflix’s Teddy Biaselli told Empire

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Let Me In whatsoever.

It just didn't need to be made.

Terminator animated series,

Netflix Greenlights ‘Terminator’ Animated Series from Skydance

The Terminator getting animated in a brand new series greenlit by Netflix.

Skydance, the studio behind the last two films in the franchise as well as 2018’s Annihilation, will produce the series alongside Production I.G., the studio behind Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, and Eden of the East.

The first Terminator film debuted back in 1984. Directed by James Cameron (Aliens), the film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role as a cyborg sent from the future to kill a woman (Linda Hamilton) whose son holds the key to humanity’s salvation after a war begins between man and machine.

Netflix Greenlights ‘Terminator’ Animated Series from Skydance

The film was an almost instant hit and spawned five sequels and a television series titled The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Schwarzenegger would appear in every single film, though he was not physically in Terminator: Salvation. The most recent entry, Terminator: Dark Fate was released in 2019. This series marks the first time, however, that the Terminator will be animated.

Mattson Tomlin, one of the writers on the new Robert Pattinson film The Batman, has been signed as showrunner on the series.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart,” Tomlin said in a statement quoted on Deadline. “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”

Twisted metal tv series

https://www.variety.com/2021/tv/news...rs-1234911825/

‘Twisted Metal’ Series From ‘Deadpool’ Writers in the Works at Sony Pictures TV, PlayStation Productions

A live-action series adaptation of the “Twisted Metal” PlayStation game franchise is officially moving forward, Variety has learned.

Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are developing a series based on the “Twisted Metal” vehicular combat games, the first of which was released in 1995. It was originally reported in 2019 that Sony was interested in developing a series based on the games.

The new series is described as an action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind the “Deadpool” films and “Zombieland

’Twisted Metal’ is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.”

The show is about a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown named who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.

Popular on Variety

Michael Jonathan Smith, who most recently wrote for and produced “Cobra Kai, will write and executive produce the series. Reese and Wernick are attached to executive produce. Will Arnett will executive produce via his Electric Avenue production company along with Marc Forman and Peter Principato of Artists First. Arnett is currently under a first-look deal at Sony Pictures Television. Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions will also executive produce, as will Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios.

There has been speculation that Arnett will voice Sweet Tooth in a cameo, but according to an individual with knowledge of the project, no deal is currently in place for him to do so.

Smith is repped by Verve, 3Arts, and Miloknay Weiner
