Excellent price -- I'm glad I held off buying a copy. Thanks for the spot.

Refused 12th August 2011 03:57 PM

I thought that was a bit much as I already had the disc, which was provided for review. However, for £10, I just couldn't say 'no'!

Nice spot. I'll have some of that.

Edit : Although, the order is showing "Awaiting stock".

Wonder how long I'll have to wait (for either the disc or the email saying that no stock can be found)?

Baseball Fury 14th August 2011 05:19 PM

Withnail & I and The Long Good Friday are only £3.95 at Zavvi at the mo!

Refused 14th August 2011 05:23 PM

I was tempted by Withnail, but there's a new version coming out in a few months. Hoping for a new transfer, but who knows.

Baseball Fury 14th August 2011 05:26 PM

For the price of a sarnie it was a no brainer really

Refused 14th August 2011 05:29 PM

I'll stick with the sandwich for now. :tongue1:
I like knowing I have the best version of something. Even if I just watch the film once and store it on my shelf for years.

Do you have any further info on this new edition?

Beyond it supposedly being out Oct 3rd, I know nothing!

the blob 14th August 2011 07:59 PM

There's a new version of The Long Good Friday coming too, which I'm hoping will fix the cropping issue of the current one. Still, cost me less than a fiver when I bought it a while back..

The Long Good Friday [Blu-ray]: Amazon.co.uk: Film & TV

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 15th August 2011 08:24 AM

I'll probably order The Long Good Friday from Zavvi as it's been one I've been meaning to buy some months, but I'm puzzled by the 'cropping issue'. Can you elaborate please?

the blob 15th August 2011 11:22 AM

There's been questions about it's original AR. The last ABUS dvd had it at 1.78:1 while It's probably meant to be 1.66:1. Both the UK and US blu's have it at 1.66:1 but instead of it being properly matted, it looks like they just cropped all four sides and zoomed the image.

You can see the difference here and the UK is pretty much the same framing as the US one. Really noticeable in the pool shot.

The Long Good Friday Blu-ray Bob Hoskins

Supposedly this new BD is from a different master but unless they fix that, I'll just keep the one I have.

antmumford 18th August 2011 04:34 PM

In case anyone is interested, both Hook and Jumanji are only £6.99 each Pre-order price at HMV at the moment. Cheapest Pre-order prices I've ever seen.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 18th August 2011 05:02 PM

Play.com have a two for £12 deal on at the moment. There are a few good titles amongst the usual fodder, plus they have some pre-order titles involved too (The Mask for example).

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 18th August 2011 05:21 PM

Must. Stop. Buying.... Must. Resist. Temptation.

dream demon 18th August 2011 08:58 PM

There's some good titles in there; I'm tempted buy Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th at those prices.

Both excellent releases -- if I didn't already own them, I'd buy them!

Mine's showing as 'packing' so I expect I should have it some time next week. Anyone else receive theirs yet?

Posted on 18th.

Please be waiting when I get home

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 19th August 2011 09:47 AM

Mine was also shipped yesterday but I'm not expecting it to arrive until next week, possibly Monday. If it arrives tomorrow I'll be pleasantly surprised.

wayfarer 19th August 2011 11:51 AM

I received my copy of Akira yesterday. Nice packaging! I haven't had a look at the transfer yet.

dream demon 19th August 2011 11:57 AM

Hopefully I shouldn't have to wait too long for mine then. The last time I watched Akira it was on VHS. :pop2:

Sam 19th August 2011 06:16 PM

Fopp have a load of blu rays for £3 again. Picked up the following today:

Brooklyn's Finest
Planet Terror
The Men Who Stare at Goats

They had a load of others like 'Death Proof', 'Dorian Gray', 'Lesbian Vampire Killers' etc. at the same price.

Might still be worth a look - they seemed to have loads of boxes behind the counter, which they didn't have room for on the shelves (at least in the Manchester branch)

I had it in my myopic brain that you were referring to the London branch  We may not even have had any cheap stock in the London store.

wayfarer 24th August 2011 10:17 AM

...just had a right result in the London Shaftesbury Ave FOPP. Went in to get them to remove a security tag from my sealed copy of Fido (i have this habit of buying a film, leaving it sealed on the shelf for years and then decide to watch it) and came away with this little lot;

All £3 Blus

District 13
D13: Ultimatum
A Perfect Getaway
44 inch chest (sadly not a Russ Meyer type movie:lol: )
Defiance
Brooklyn's Finest
Planet Terror
Death Proof

I have Grindhouse but the films haven't got True HD sound or the "extended" versions.

You're so lucky having access to a FOPP, especially that store. I found loads of goodies when I visited London the other week but had no money to spend at the time. I think I'll be heading back up to london in a week or two so hopefully some Blu-ray bargains are still to be had then.

Looks like they've got the same stuff as in Manchester. I'm having to battle against the lure of buying stuff just because it's £3 . I might pop back in for Youth in Revolt though...

PaulD 24th August 2011 04:24 PM

So jealous! Would love a Fopp in Newcastle

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 24th August 2011 06:03 PM

It's really sad that the days of small retail chains have almost gone and, in most towns, it's HMV or nothing.

Either that happened because of the Internet or because of the bigger, more powerful chains. I'll probably go with the former as Zavvi (previously Virgin) used to have high Street stores but are now, with few exceptions, Internet only.

Face it, when did you last find an in-store bargain which was better than anything on the Internet?

That is true. While I acknowledge that high street stores have higher overheads it does seem that they charge a ridiculously higher price for their goods (and surely if it's cheaper for them to trade online some of the online saving could be transferred to the high street?).

That said, I did see the limited Dr Manhattan bluray of Watchmen in HMV tofay for £10 which I can't find online although I suspect that's down to it being an HMV exclusive release anyway. Still, that's a pretty good bargain

stefanmetal 25th August 2011 01:05 AM

Used to be a really good independent shop locally to me that sold a great random selection of CDs and DVDs. It was called Spin, but it shut down like the rest.

Zavvi went bust. The Hut bought just the name as it was a recognizable brand online. Same thing happened with Woolworths...

The Internet has had a massive impact on high street stores such as HMV but it's the supermarkets which have done the most damage.

The last time I went, there was a Zavvi shop at the Royal Quays outlet store in North Shields, but the prices weren't particularly competitive when I thought about how much the same things would cost on the Zavvi website.

dream demon 25th August 2011 02:39 PM

The problem with the Zavvi website, though, is that yes I have found some bargains, but most of the time I never get them. I just give up waiting when I still haven't received anything a month after ordering and cancel them.

Sam 25th August 2011 04:39 PM

Even Fopp is owned by HMV (they bought them out a few years ago) so there really is little option on the High Street. I can only imagine they're still allowed a certain level of independence since the prices didn't seem to be affected by the takeover .

'That's Entertainment' and CEX are OK for second hand bargains but for brand new DVDs, it's pretty much HMV or nowt (unless you count the Supermarkets).
