Cool VHS: Store Memories

Hi everyone,

Step back in time and have a browse through the VHS rental stores of yesteryear. Pop into the 'Adults Only' room and take a trip down memory lane - follow the black tape road!

Here's a thread dedicated to your memories of VHS rental stores. From stories to photos - share them below!

I recently learned that the Subway I often go to used to be a rental store, with a whole basement full of horror VHS! Turns out that I have a couple of these from that store in my collection, from charity shop pick ups - Toy Soldiers and Dick Maas' Do Not Disturb, which have the Video Plus stamp on their tapes. So cool!

Video Plus, Norwich

That's the only photo I can find of the place online.

So, share your memories and let's build a thread full of VHS rental store memories and pictures...

Every Saturday afternoon my mum and dad would take me to rent a few VHS for the weekend. I always use to run to get a horror movie. I have no idea if that shop still standing if it is will take a snap shop of it. Nowadays. Rental shops are sun bed and tanning salons.

My old video shop is now a little shop which sells wooden ornaments etc. (God knows how it stays open but good luck to them!!) I still have fond memories of the first horror video I was allowed to rent from there ... 'The Video Dead'

My old video store is a house now.
They used to let me rent pretty much anything, with permission from my parents so long as the film didn't contain graphic sex, blood and guts was absolutely fine, people getting stabbed, cut up with chainsaws, flesh eating zombies ripping people apart, but excessive sex and nudity was a no go

The guy that ran it even used to save me the display stands and posters after they were done with them, and would recommend all kinds of stuff to me when I popped in on my way home from school

Spoiled for choice in Kirkintilloch in the 80's/ early90's for renting AND buying.
We had:
JOHN MENZIES
WOOLWORTHS
GRANADA
D E R
RADIO RENTALS
GLENDEE VIDEO CLUB
VIDEOVAULTS-THEE Video Shop to go to!
VIDEOLAND
GLOBAL

and every newspaper and corner shop and cafe had videos as well!

and later the TV rental shops all vanished and Blockbuster bought Videovaults premises and put all the other indies out the game.

First vhs I ever saw was An American Werewolf...
First vhs I actually bought brand new was Jimi Plays Berkerly (still have it)
First two I ever hired were The Evil Dead and a live Sabbath tape from 76.
First ex rental I ever bought was either a Python tape or Suburbia (Penelope Spheeris), second was Inferno
First vhs I ever saw at someone else's house was How Sleep The Brave
First vhs featuring naked fun was Inside Seka
First vhs I ever ordered by mail was Flipside No 6 (from Rough Trade?..still have this as well!)

And the last I bought new was Audition
