Kyle's VHS hunt diary

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/vhshunt1.jpg

well since i decided a few days ago that i will now start to collect VHS! i thought it might be a good idea to keep a diary of films i get hold of and post pics and maybe stories of how or where i got them from.

yesterday the only VHS i owned were zombie child and hard boiled 2, i used to have hundreds but over the years have given them away to charity shops  to make space for dvd's.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7630.jpg

i woke up this morning quite excited, i had decided to get up town early and search some charity shops for tapes, the first place i was going to try was the place i had given most of my old tapes to over the years.

when i walked through the door i instantly noticed that the vhs section had been replaced with some shitty kids toy :mmph:, i asked the guy where they had gone and he said that nobody buys vhs anymore so they have thrown all of the tapes away at the tip  and it seems that this has happend at a few other charity shops also.

most of the shops that did have any only seemed to have work out videos or children's films but i did find these at one of them.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7632.jpg

i have seen repossessed quite a few times but don't own it on DVD and it was 25p, i have never even heard of electra glide in blue but after reading the back it sounds quite interesting and this was 50p.

when i got back home my little lad was waiting for me with a small vhs shaped package in his chubby little hands for me :woot: inside was Amityville 3 that i had won on ebay on Monday for £1, not sure if i had seen this before or not but will watch tonight hopefully.

Pete 27th April 2011 06:16 PM

I have that HARD BOILED 2 tape. Not watched it though.

Kyle 27th April 2011 06:20 PM

i haven't yet either and i have had it for years :P

robertzombie 27th April 2011 06:44 PM

Looks fun! Keep us posted! :D

PaulD 27th April 2011 06:47 PM

Excellent stuff - I look forward to seeing what you find!

I too regret getting rid of all my VHS's a few years back to make way for dvd. I think the only ones I have left are Lost Highway, Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, The Seventh Seal, Repulsion, Walkabout, Monkey Shines and the Children of the Corn Trilogy. We have a vhs/dvd combo player too so I can always watch them if I want.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 27th April 2011 07:15 PM

I luv this thread! :woot: Fantastic idea, Slicer - good luck with your new VHS collecting obsession! Is that Amityville 3 VHS a Big Box or just a normal one? Repossessed looks great fun!

That's the trouble with finding VHS now - some charity shops dont have any and they're often filled with crap kiddy films or films about fishing ¬__¬ so when you do find something it's even more rewarding. Luckily there's the internet - though that kinda takes away the whole hunting idea.

Keep us posted buddy! :)

Kyle 27th April 2011 08:15 PM

yeah it does but it seems apart from going town to town hunting charity shops or carboots (im going to go one this sunday) its the only way, shame about postage prices :mmph: £2.50 a tape

amityville 3 is just a small box

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 27th April 2011 08:27 PM

 Sometimes you end up paying more for postage than the actual video - ah well.

Funnily enough I've just begun collecting VHS again myself - I sold a ton of them to Smack Convertors a few years ago back when you could still get 50p each for them. Made a tidy sum actually. I only kept a hold of a handful that had not yet been issued on DVD at the time or if they had were OOP and hard to get - Naked, The Keep, etc.

So far I have picked up the big box versions of The Geek and Trick Or Treat, and a pre-cert copy of House Of Whipchord. I'm focusing mainly on the big box versions as I love the fact that each company at the time seemed to put a lot of thought into there own packaging, with brightly coloured cases and embossed logos etc. rather than just all using the same generic cases. That and the amazing artwork is what makes collecting VHS so appealing to me.

Hmmm, maybe I should start my own thread ;) .

By the way, Electraglide In Blue is an amazing film - one of my favourites; it was unavailable for a long time on DVD (at least in the UK, as far as I know) but has since been issued by Optimum. They showed it on BBC's Moviedrome many years ago and I had been hunting for it ever since :) . I picked up the soundtrack on LP when it was reissued by Simply Vinyl a few years ago. It is generally regarded as one of the all time great soundtracks, along with Bullet et al.

Some nice pick-ups there; I have a real soft spot for those Palace Horror vids - ah, memories :) - and have always fancied collecting the complete set. One of the few tapes I kept hold of was my Palace Night Of The Demons.

Kyle 1st May 2011 03:42 PM

ahhh too bad :(

today i went to my local car boot sale, i got up at 7am so that i could get there for 8am and was expecting to be surrounded by awesome tapes by 9am, its been such a long time since i went to a car boot sale, the last time i went there was still loads of people selling VHS and it was quite rare to see DVD's! it's the complete opposite now.

there were a few selling vhs but most of it was Disney films or films like independence day or snatch although i did drop onto a few things
.

the first 2 i picked up were these, i have never seen any and tbh im not expecting much at all but i had already been looking for something for 30 mins and there was no way i was going to go home empty handed.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7669.jpg

then a few mins later this caught my eye underneath a finding nemo vhs and antz dvd at a stall mostly selling baby clothes and crap

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7673.jpg

after i had been there for about nearly 2 hours searching my way through other peoples junk i was ready to go home and give up but on my way pout i noticed a stall selling dinner plates and bowls  had a vhs sticking out from under a plate in a box under the table and when i went over i found this ( defo my find of the day)

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7672.jpg

i paid the guy his 50p and was just walking off when he said he has a big box of vhs in the back of his car and i can have the whole lot for £4 if i want, well i was pretty excited and almost threw the old lady that was standing between me and the car  but when i looked in the box there was some awesome films but only a few had covers :( so i just got these 2

I own that Freddy's Nightmares VHS - and Dream Demon coming to think of it.

I used to go to Car Boots looking for VHS until I ran out of storage space and it's a lot of fun and suprisingly addictive so I'm enjoying reading about your hunt. Somehow artwork always looked a bit better on VHS.

I'll post some pics when I get chance but here are some of my best finds:

American Nightmare
Blood Link
The Slime
(Vipco)
King Frat (Vipco Cult Classics), although I think I traded this with Pete
Machine Gun McCain pre-cert
The Black Panther
Three on a Meathook
(a European edition, Dutch I think)
Barfly (ex-rental)
Night Watch (Elizabeth Taylor)
Fists of Steel

... and a whole load more that are currently living in my loft. I'll dig them out and if there are any I can live without, will let you know. I know I have/had a Palace Edge of Sanity you'd be welcome to but have a feeling I chucked it away

that would be awesome sam, cheers!

im enjoying finding them even more than watching them to be honest and yeah the artwork is so much better, even more so when i get a big box vhs , just feels like i have something substantial in my hand.

a lot of people have thrown away VHS over the years, myself included :( i bet some real gems have gone to the tip too  i used to own hundreds of VHS when i was living with my parents, so many that i had to build my Tv unit out of them

Kyle 3rd May 2011 05:37 PM

today i went to liverpool to meet pete and get some more VHS, this is my best day so far collecting :)

i meet pete at the train station to be greated with pete and two huge bags of tapes which we swapped over and i put in my little suitcase and backpack , they only just fitted :P and they were heavy!

after some searching around liverpool and a burger king :woot: we went into a a building that was filled with lots of small businesses selling all sorts, we spotted a small door backed into a corner that didn't really look like a shop more like an emergency exit, i tried the door and we walked into a small shop with 3 guys in there just chatting and they had quite a big bookcase full of VHS, after a few mins looking i got these for 50p each

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7697.jpg
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7694.jpg

apart from the blade runner, i got that from some cash converter type of place for 25p

had a great day with pete chatting about films and wandering around the town, after a while i got the train home and was so tempted to open my bags and search them to see what tapes i had got from pete but i doubt that i would have gotten them back in the bags, so i waited till i got home!

this is what i found!

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7703.jpg
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7702.jpg
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7701.jpg
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7700.jpg

some great tapes there and to top the day off when i was home i had also had this delivered in the day while i was out

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/CIMG7693.jpg

so for one day i think i have done great! to get all this
