But who's to say it would've been the same film with that much shorter production period? It's probably safe to assume the extended gestation period would only have had a positive effect on the quality of the final film, script polishing and whatnot. Didn't the opposite thing happen with Quantum? Rushed through production without a finished script . . . ?

That's correct. Had a decent script not been there in sure they'd not have gotten Mendes, either.

According to BoxofficeMojo 55% of the gross goes to the studio as profit.

My post was only a musing rather than statement of fact. I never looked it up how much MGM were losing. Just the fact that it was the Bond film that was the high profile casualty and look how well it did.

But even a half billion is still a drop in the ocean compared to the that owed by a debt-ridden studio like MGM. I really don't think one film could save it. Don't get me wrong, something like SKYFALL could go a long way to help, and any potential investors would be given a lot of reassurance that the studio was making steps in the right direction but I really think it would take more than that.

As an aside, if you've not read the book FINAL CUT, which details the making of Michael Cimino's HEAVEN'S GATE and its catastrophic effect on James Bond's original studio, United Artists, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

He doesn't seem to be enough of a flirt to play Bond.

The thought of Christopher Lee quipping and womanising just seems wrong . . .

I think I could buy it if he killed them with one shot from an improbable distance and drank their blood afterwards...with three nipples (his not theirs).

Default SPECTRE

The title definitely whets the appetite.

With this and a new Star Wars film, 2015 is going to be some year.
