Passion (1954) Starring Cornel Wilde as a young rancher seeking vengeance for the murders of his wife (Yvonne de Carlo - here playing two roles) and his parents. The killers are a ruthless band of land grabbers led by Salvador Sandro, who Wilde, now a fugitive from justice himself thanks to sheriff Raymond Burr, intends to kill one by one. Passion is a western that's as surprising as it is ludicrously titled. Sounding like a romantic drama, it comes across as very misleading. What we actually have is a brutal revenge thriller set in Mexican ruled Spanish California that seems to pre-empt the Spaghetti western genre by several years, not only that. The final third leaves the sweltering desert towns and plunges us into a chilly snowbound chase across the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Not as low budget as many RKO westerns, the film features some nice photography among the numerous shoot outs. Horror fans may be interested to know that Lon Chaney is the first of the thugs to meet his makerat the hands of Wilde. (See pic below) Recommended. |

Brimstone (2016) Unrelentingly grim western, harrowing and very brutal, in fact it's the most cheerless film i can recall and makes Combat Shock seem like a Monday afternoon Channel 5 film. The plot swirls around in perpetual motion as one sickening act follows another. For example Carla Juri's prostitute, a secondary character, has her tongue cut out, is stabbed in the chest and then has her head set on fire, and the camera never wavers. It's not just adults either that things like this happen to. It's also a beautifully made film. Dakota Fanning is superb as the put upon young wife on the run from Guy Pearce's stomach turning preacher, just about the most unpleasant character i can recall. Brimstone is an extremely sadistic film, but damn, it's also a good film. Highly recommended. Just don't expect to smile as you watch. Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce. |

God's Gun (1976, Gianfranco Parolini) Lee Van Cleef. Jack Palance. Sybil Dannning. Richard Boone. Leif Garrett. Proto Cannon production from the GoGo Boys . Need more? Fair enough .... When his preacher twin is gunned down by scum, LVC saunters into action in a supremely silly film. They just can't get it right (luckily for us ). Recommend!!!

Ride Clear of Diablo (1954) Decent Audie Murphy western where he plays a sheriff who heads to a small town when he finds out his father and brother have been gunned down and their cattle stolen. Some good action sequences and a fine support cast including Susan Cabot, Denver Pyle, the venerable Jack Elam and the ever excellent Dan Duryea with whom Murphy has great love him or hate him camaraderie means this stands out from the usual studio programmers. |

Man in the Shadow (1957) Fifties set western starring Jeff Chandler as a small town sheriff investigating the murder of a farm hand at the ranch of the all powerful Orson Welles. Similar in style to Bad Day at Black Rock in both being a fifties set film and that the sheriff gets no help from the townsfolk who all seem indifferent to the killing, this is a pretty enjoyable western full of complex social significance. |
