'Cross of iron' is great. One i really like but is not that well known is 'Battleground', it's well worth checking out. Battleground-4_-624x786.jpg (1949) From imdb. We follow a band of American soldiers as they engage the Germans in a snowy, foggy winter near Bastogne in World War II. They're low on fuel, rations, and ammunition; the Germans are constantly encouraging their surrender via radio and leaflets, and most importantly, the pervasive thick fog makes movement and identification difficult and prevents their relief by Allied air support. This film focuses much more on the psychology and morale of the soldiers than on action footage and heroics.

The Bridge At Remagen (1969, John Gullermin) Bradford Dillman and George Segal pout their way through the German countryside. Slightly more cynical than A Bridge ... this also has Robert Vaughn limbering up for playing all those Nazis in the 80s . Solid enough actioner. RIP Dillman.

Hope and Glory 1987 The outbreak of World War 2 is seen through the eyes of a 9 year old boy. Semi autobiography of director John Boorman, shows us the day Churchill announcement of Britain at war with Germany, men signing up, the Anderson shelter and the evacuees. It does have some comedy elements with Ian Bannen as the grumpy grandfather.
