Absurd (Aristide Massaccesi/Joe D'Amato, 1981)

aka Antropophagus 2/The Grim Reaper 2

It would be a major coup to put this out, as there has never been an English language DVD release...

Kevin Coed 7th October 2007 05:59 AM

MGM own the rights don't they?

Sam@Cult Labs 7th October 2007 01:20 PM

I'm going to find out about this...

Philleh 17th October 2007 07:42 PM

This is a must for sure. With the sucess of the D'Amato reprise, topped with being the first release in the world, this would make a brilliant calling card for you guys.

With the BBFC relaxed, and it not being submitted for a rating in the last 10 years, I can't see why it wouldn't be passed uncut either :)

vincenzo 17th October 2007 09:20 PM

It would be even better if it was issued as a double with Anthropophagous: The Beast. Maybe then the Hollywood DVD issue of The Grim Reaper could be consigned to history.

I couldn't see either film having BBFC problems now.

Philleh 17th October 2007 10:11 PM

Agreed, "that" scene really isn't that graphic anyways; it's almost laughable.

Damn, got an urge to go watch it now! lol

jewbo23 15th November 2007 11:23 AM

Yeah this one needs a release. The only thing I know about is a german DVD. I have made my own bootleg DVD from a vhs print so I need an upgrade.
Still not gotten around to actually watching it yet.

Did you find anything else out about this one? This would be a major happening!!

Marc Morris 4th January 2008 02:40 PM

It's definitely owned by MGM - Joe D'amato's business partner Donatella Donati confirmed this to me several years ago - an entire library this film was part of was acquired in a major deal by MGM.

Philleh 4th January 2008 02:52 PM

I'm sure we can alert certain groups to the material D'Amato shot... Who would then bitch and moan to MGM and boycott them and what-not until they are forced to hand over the rights for a pitance! mwa hahaha

Yeah and bitch and moan to Paramount for Four Flies... it's that kind of epic time wasting that shortens your life when you're trying to find stuff to release because films like that are of no consequence to studios that size. If they were MGM would sell me the Cannon library for 10p and I could really have some fun!

vincenzo 4th January 2008 04:32 PM

Yes it's frustrating when the majors act like this. I think everyone has bitched to Paramount about an uncut My Bloody Valentine but they simply don't appear interested.

I'm not sure about the original Anthropophagous: The Beast though, as Hollywood released the heavily edited version (The Grim Reaper) a while back. Do MGM also hold the rights to this one too?

Philleh 5th January 2008 11:10 AM

I'm sure MGM will not be happy to learn about 'certain' aspects of D'Amato's filmography... the whole jerking off horses thing appeared too often for comfort! lol

And that's his regular movies... I love to see their reaction when they learn he was a full fledged pornographer :)

I can see the rights no longer being wanted.

*crosses fingers*

Almar@Cult Labs 5th January 2008 05:28 PM

The problem is that majors don't want to spend time looking at these things as it costs them money, is a hassle, no one would pay them lots of money for the rights and they've got to look into each thing from a legal standpoint. It's a bit of a Catch 22 and I'd never bother because I've seen other people tear their hair out over such things and they know what they're doing! The only hope is that every now and again you might get a fan working for a major but the mindset has to be totally different to work there - it's a numbers game ruled by accountants and marketeers.

Philleh 5th January 2008 05:42 PM

Boooooo! :(

Maybe we can just break in and nick it?
