That is simply not true I'm afraid. Would you like to offer up some examples?

Well if you can tell me where I can buy official DVD releases of all the films I listed above, I'll concede the point.

However, many of them only exist as VHS rips on sites such as ZDD.

This is why Shameless is fantastic in that they will hopefully be bringing many of these forgotten gems to an official DVD release.

Exactly - if you really wanted to own an original, you could search for an original VHS release as I have done.

Besides, many titles ZDD offer are in fact rips of officially available DVDs.

I definitely think rips of available DVDs is wrong, and should be severely frowned upon.

However, I despise VHS... and don't really particularly enjoy VHS rips... hence my keenness for Shameless to release some of these titles so I don't have to watch through VHS fuzz, or listen to VHS hiss.

I'm a picture quality man... so will always go for whatever I can find that has the best picture available. Hence why I bludgeoned my VHS player to pieces with a hammer many moons ago.

Hmm.. a bit of an over-reaction perhaps?

I'd rather have a film on VHS (or Beta) than not at all to be honest.

Many films once available on video simply won't ever see a DVD re-release due to rights issues.

Exactly why someone as VHS-phobic as myself has to go the damn bootlegger route on occasion.

I'd much rather have the official DVD version of course.

There's been a few cases where once a good DVD release comes out, I've immediately bought it and then snapped the abysmal VHS rip DVD. One that comes to mind was the decent release of Iguana With Tongue Of Fire. The VHS rip of that was dire... it looked like two different greek VHS recordings spliced together... with the last half of the film being a good deal better than the first.

I've always said that if I ever win the lottery, I would attempt to get these films released properly... looking better than ever. It was a revelation once I saw that Shameless are attempting to do just that.

Great list and some repeat requests in there that other have asked for - certainly we're now puzzling through lists trying to find some good stuff for 2009. One title that sticks out as doable (on our travels through the world of materials hell and as Marc points out rights hell) is Who Killed The Prosecutor and Why? But is it more of a hardcore fan curio than something that's likely to have wider appeal?

As for VHS/Beta I'm now collecting them again (space permitting) - some of these films look like they'll never make it out onto decent DVDs due to rights crud like Hardware and Dream Demon and that old site fave Night of the Demon!
