<cough>

Early 80 slasher flick?

Almar@Cult Labs 18th January 2008 09:46 PM

I went to the trouble of buying the old Avco Embassy tape and then weeks later had to move down to London and sell my thousands of tapes so never got to see it - was it any good?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th January 2008 11:29 PM

Never seen this one myself :(

bedorca 19th January 2008 08:04 AM

I remember seeing it in my youth and it being particularly atmospheric and entertaining  Copies these days are like hens teeth! I'll try and track one down on Ebay and let you know if it is worth it! :)

I've still got my old Embassy VHS of this, in a really nice box design with a big eye peeking through a keyhole on the front cover.

It's a lost gem, one of the best slasher/monster movies of it's time for me. Makes a nice companion piece to TOWER OF EVIL in some respects with it being set on a deserted island.

Count my vote in for a release of this one.

Almar@Cult Labs 19th January 2008 05:42 PM

Welcome Eidolon! :)

You've further compunded my misery at not having my tape anymore! :( I liked the Avco Embassy spines - they looked rather nice lined up. Quite an odd range of films though for a company then owned by Coca Cola I always thought...

Anyway the plan is to push a new label of mayhem so please suggest away for titles, extras and whatever else comes to mind and we'll see if we can't recreate some 80s inspired fun. ;)

Thanks, that was a quick reply!

I have quite a few I'd like, most by browsing across my VHS selection and seeing what's not on DVD yet. Things like THE DEAD PIT, PRISON, and a forgotten anthology hosted by John Hurt called FRIGHTMARES. Nobody else seems to have heard of that one?....

Almar@Cult Labs 19th January 2008 05:50 PM

Ah Prison! I'd love to do that along with some other of the better Charles Band 'classics' (ahem) but I the problem is always wanting to buy lots of crap at the same time and not having the money. Still we are out and about shopping so that's reminded me to check them out!

Angel 19th January 2008 06:58 PM

Presumably it would pass uncut now. No idea what the previous cuts were.

Almar@Cult Labs 19th January 2008 08:47 PM

Plus I thought the video was pre '84? I don't recall a BBFC on it. Could be wrong though....

Almar@Cult Labs 19th January 2008 08:48 PM

Hang on... are we still talking about humungous or Prison?

vincenzo 19th January 2008 08:51 PM

Humongous I think. :)

I'm pretty sure the cinema cuts (7 secs) were to the opening rape scene. Strangely the same print lost a further 1 min 3 secs for video (additional cuts to cinema ones) yet the video ended up being 4 mins longer than the cinema version.

Almar@Cult Labs 19th January 2008 08:59 PM

Well I'm going to have to look into it now! Right Vince - how about that Night Train Murders sleeve?

Angel 19th January 2008 09:02 PM

I always get the film mixed up with The Beast Within because they're so similar. BEAST also suffered cuts to a rape I think.

vincenzo 19th January 2008 09:08 PM

I'll post in the NTM thread otherwise folks may get confused.

Incidentally I wondered if the video version of Humongous was the longer unrated print (given the running time). The opening rape is much more explicit with full-frontal nudity and the dog attack has more graphic footage of the wounds (throat and leg closeups). It's probably the same cinema print though and the BBFC have made a running time cock-up (again).

Angel 19th January 2008 09:16 PM

The cinema title was different as well "HUMOUGOUS".

According to the IMDB, Embassy released a an R rated version as well as an unrated version on video
