What amazes me here!...first on pre-cert video (released from Inter Vision)..same cuts as cinema vesrion (totalling 44 secs), second the first re-release (released from Braveworld) cuts totalling 2mins 54secs (including the previous BBFC cuts) and the second re-release (released from Synergy Video) MORE cuts were added up to 3mins 38sec! WTF!!!

It was the R rated version that was submitted to the BBFC in 1980. As far as I know the R version was uncut, the cuts listed above appear to be the cuts the BBFC made not the MPAA.

The total cuts for video was 2m 54s. There were never any additional BBFC cuts. It was the distributor in 1991 who cut more footage than was required. These cuts added up to 3m 38s.

Aahh...thx Angel for clarifying in reagrds of that!..I thou it WAS the BBFC who requested MORE additional cuts for its '91 video release! So it was the pre-cut version that they (Synergy Video dist.) submitted to the BBFC! That did confuse me a bit there!..lol! Really the BBFC should clarify more of that clearly!

The one u read the IMBb message post which the user owned the video, it was the '85 video release..so you are correct there Angel, that all the cuts that he/she listed WERE made by the BBFC! HOWEVER that user did miss one...the heaviest one!..totalling 2m 30s!

Here it is as I copied from my WD files!

The scene where Eastman (Robert Ginty) fills a dum-dum bullet wth mercury has been heavily cut, almost 2.30 minutes, missing 12 shots

The MPAA cut some of the violence including a shot of the american's severed head as it hangs by a bit of skin, and I think the attack on Steve James was reduced along with the soldering sequence. The MPAA also objected to the ending where Ginty survives after being shot.I gather in US prints he was supposed to be killed off (though I'm not sure it was actually altered 100%).I have the AB OOP directors cut (similar I think to the last dvd release here. The big Box Intervision version I saw contained the lengthy scene where Ginty fills his shells with Mercury.Later video versions cut this footage though as far as I know it was in the cinema version. I think Angel saw this on release so she'll know better.

This post on the IMDB mentions cuts made for an 'R' restored to the unrated DC.It does not mention alterations to the climax but I'm sure Glickenhouse mentions in liner notes the MPAA disapproved of the Exterminator evading justice.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080707/...read/105627954
EDIT -Apparently certain countries disapproved of the "happy" ending on release so the climax may have been altered overseas & not in the US after all.

Yes it was in the cinema version, Mark.

I know the director's cut (now also available in the UK) contains scenes that I had not previously see in the shorter theatrical version but I didn't realise they were MPAA cuts. When this longer DC of the film was eventually submitted to the BBFC they didn't appear to have any problems with these new scenes. In 2000 they cut what they had previously cut before (with some cuts being waived).

Even James Ferman had no problem with Ginty escaping justice, it's very similar to Death Wish.

Exterminator 2 had some footage removed by the MPAA. We got the R. I think the unrated version is probably lost forever.

I can still vaguely remember at least one paper condemning the film prior to its theatrical release.Pretty tame stuff now but the trailer is still very memorable. Not many film fans will forget where the line "If you're lying,I'll be back !" came from.
