I thought the image quality was excellent - most notably in the richness of the colours. It was a pleasant surprise to see it looking so good (especially for it's age, as you mentioned).
It's a shame
Shogun, which I watched a couple of days later wasn't nearly as good; although much better than the DVD-R I had before, plus the steelbook is fantastic.
