Phil, I'm writing down all these recommendations, cos I'm in on a big sci-fi buzz at the moment. Your two picks from earlier are on the way from Amazon, and I'm sneaking in a read of Day of the Triffids before they arrive...
Oh jeez, don't get me started on unwatched films (I've just had a splurge in town whilst I was Xmas shopping).

I read Triffids years ago, when I first started secondary school in fact, another brilliant slice of British sci-fi.

I'd highly, highly, highly recommend Alisdair Gray's Lanark too, which isn't strictly sci-fi, but certainly features sci-fi tropes - it's another epic read that brings something new to literature and also how typography is used in books (it took him 30 years to write too!)

And I can't recommend enough Dan Simmons' Hyperion cantos or his Ilium and Olympus novels. So rich in literary references and absolute rip roaring adventure tales - he really is an incredibly talented writer (Drood and The Terror are two other non sci-fi books that left me reeling).
