I should really watch the American Nightmare directors cut on my Tromamasterpiece DVD (which I haven't seen as I've only watched the theatrical cut), with this weather something to take the bleakness away afterwards!
The American Nightmare cut is the better film. Giovinazzo said that the timing was better when Troma cut and retitled it as Combet Shock but more recently he has gone back to his original cut being superior. I do miss the bombing of Vietnam and upbeat music at the beginning on Combat Shock - the opening titles on American Nightmare are far more appropriate though.

One of my favourite films and proof to peole who want to make films that they can do so with great skill even if there is no budget. Giovinazzo's later No Way Home is also excellent but depressing.
